when trying to access the pirate bay you get a notice saying:
eircom would like to reassure customers that:
    • eircom will not monitor customer’s activities at any stage, nor will it place any monitoring equipment or software on its network in order to facilitate this block.
    • eircom will not provide personal details or any information relating to customers to any third party, including the record companies.
yet on their website it says:
What criteria is been used to identify customers?

IRMA is using a third party (Dtecnet) to identify the eircom IP addresses engaged in illegal downloading and sharing of music. eircom has no control over this identification process........
    whats the story with that????

Unless I'm reading them wrong, I don't see how those two statements are mutually incompatible.

Eircom aren't doing any monitoring of torrenting themselves. A third party is monitoring for ip addresses involved in downloading illegal content and these ip addresses are then sent to eircom to follow up on.

In theory, this practise could be applied to any ISP, the difference being that (for example) UPC told them to get lost whereas eircom gave in prior to it going to court.

The dodgy bit in relation to eircom is their assumption of your guilt based on 3rd party say so, without having to prove it themselves.

This has been done to death on this forum enough times now. Those two statements are not incompatible with each other. eircom doesn't monitor anything or anyone, they just block and disconnect.
