Crazy connection issues today (3g)

Had this one or two times before, but never this bad.

Basically my phone (HTC Desire, Meteor) is on wi-fi as I'm leaving the house, and somewhere on the way to work I'll turn wi-fi off, and switch on the mobile network. Always worked like a charm.

Today however, it just refused to connect. Can call and text fine, just can't get on the internet. Sometimes it'll come back, only to time-out randomly and then drop out totally. It'll still show that it's connected.

    What I've tried:

Tried airplane mode on, then off to reset the connections.. no joy.

Reset the APN to defaults and it didn't immediately do anything, but after a while it did work. Then it failed again.
    Wireless is off.

When I tick the "mobile network" check box, it seems to just jump immediately to "Use phone for data connection when wi-fi is unvailable" - doesn't seem to try and connect at all.

I uninstalled 3g watchdog (which has been working fine ever since I got the phone, but worth a shot), no difference.

Tried GSM auto (prl) setting, no difference.

If I tap the mobile network check box twice rapidly, it'll actually try to connect, sometimes telling me "connection failed" before going back to the "use phone for data connection when wi-fi is unavailable" message.

This is really infuriating me, been trying to solve this to no avail all day.

    Any ideas from anyone?

Everything the OP has described is happening to me since this afternoon.

    HTC Legend
    Meteor.

The wording is the same, as well as the intermittent 'working' periods.

Seems to be working now... although I have now moved about 20 miles from where it was not working... maybe something with the mast I was on?

I don't think it's anything got to do with you, it's Meteor. I think. I know numerous people that have being having problems with Mobile Connection on their HTC device. It just comes and goes. Slighty worrying at the amount of people I've heard this happening to.

I don't think there's anything you can really do to help it.

Well, same nonsense today. Had virtually no mobile internet since yesterday morning.

Saw something interesting tho while I was tinkering around. If you dial the following:

    *#*#4636#*#*

You get to the "testing" screen. Tap phone information. After the IMEI it says phone number... it's a mobile number, but not mine - any idea what that's about? Is it perhaps the original default number on the SIM?

Back in work today, same shennanigans - no 3g connection available on the desire.

There is a Desire HD on Vodafone working without issue, and a Wildfire on e-Mobile also working with no problems.

    I have a workaround -
    Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - Mobile Networks -
Change Network Mode from GSM/WCDMA Auto to GSM Only and I get an Edge connection.

If I put it on WCDMA only or GSM/WCDMA Auto I get no connection.

The handset itself works for calls & texts on either setting.

Genius man, utter genius. I assume this won't be as good as 3g and so on, but it'll allow me to get a a few things done for now.

    Thanks! :)

Yeah the connection will be slower, but it works.
I hope meteor/e-mobile sort out whatever the problem is.

Im not on Android but using a w995 on Vodafone.
Was having the exact same problem since Saturday. Seems to be ok so far this morning though.
Its a real nuisance if Im typing something really long only to be told at the end that I dont have a connection.
Im in Galway. Wonder if its region specific?

    Hi All,

So I called Meteor and spoke to someone helpful. They said this is a known issue and to resolve it do the following: (i'm halfway through so not sure it works yet)

    1. Open internet
    2. Goto Settings
    3. Clear cache
    4. Save ?
    5. Turn off phone for 5 minutes
    6. Have pie
    7. Turn on phone.

I'm at 6 above - will report again if it works!

    note: Pie is optional

Sounds dubious.. what has the internet browser to do with the connection? They're both seperate..

Or maybe they're intertwined on Android.

    Fingers crossed anyway.

I can confirm that this has not worked.

I'm going to give it another try to be sure and then will call meteor again.

It sounded like a bit of a "have you tried restarting your PC" type of sollution but I don't know jack about phone technology.

So I called Meteor again - got the same helpful person. They said that the fix they gave me works, but that the 3G network is also experiencing problems and that they hope to have this resolved today.

I said will they be sending me a free phone cover for the inconvenience.

    She lol'd.

... think I might be in there tbh,.

    1. Open internet

    4. Save ?
    5. Turn off phone for 5 minutes

Hi Guys, if you are having an issue accessing Data, change Network Mode from GSM/WCDMA Auto to GSM Only and you'll get EDGE. Update soon.

Well, did seem to be ok on GSM only, and finally switched back to GSM/WCDMA auto and it was working fine last night adn this morning.

However, seems to have died again. Although it does seem to connect, and the arrows / data counters seem to indicate a connection, but no apps etc work, including Internet.

Now I've received a Network Error for the first time on my phone in the web browser trying to get to google :D

    dns_server_failure
Your request could not be processed because an error occurred contacting the DNS server.

    So I guess it's a different problem.

I'm down too all day today (Meteor), no connectivity at all on 3G or edge, seems they are working on it..

Edit: Appears to be back up now...

    Guys,

We are moving in wrong direction.

This problem has nothing to do with Mobile service provider settings.

I have Widlfire on v2.2.1 and I am also facing this problem.

I always get the error : Use phone for data connection when Wi-Fi is unavailable

and yes, this is an error and not any functionality built in to android.

Now if you say that my settings are corrupted, then why I am able to connect to internet when I start Portable Wi-Fi hotspot, my data connection connects seamlessly while on wifi tethering.......

Does any body have got idea on this.
