Not sure if accountancy is the right place, apologies if it's not. A County Council are attempting to charge me rates owed by a deceased relative for an inherited commercial premises which is currently non-trading. I'm wondering whether anyone knows whether this is legal?. They are also attempting to charge me for rates between date of my uncles death and my legal succession, which is about a year and a half (the business ceased trading at point of his death but the licence has been retained), again does anyone know if this is legal? .

    Danke Schoen

Pay up. A pub is not supposed to have a licence unless it is trading. There seems to have been an operating licence on the premises at all times. Were the Council notified that the premises was unoccupied? If they weere why was the licencee represented to the Court as being in occupation?
