my girlfriend bought a car in the north in late 2009, shes from belfast, she moved down here in 09, car was still reg to her belfast address.
anyway, we changed insurance to down here, and we were told we had to get it vrt'd asap.
we got onto revenue, applied for exemption, but, they are looking for all sorts of things, toll receipts etc, which we cant prove she lived mainly up there, so dont think we can get exemption.
vrt is in region of 6k, we dont have any cash.

basically, we are selling car in england at weekend.
once car is gone, is there any way we could still have to pay any vrt?

Unlikely. Once it's sold it's gone, especially since the car isn't in Ireland anymore. Interesting how much proof the Revenue requires though. I'd suggest calling whoever you were dealing with in the Revenue to inform them that the car has left the country.

you would have to still own the car to be liable for vrt, so no.

Same situation as my missus and she ended up having to pay them

Once gone, its not yours to tax, insure, etc.
