Oil is checked on the dipstick.... on a level surface.

Water is checked in the expansion tank generally.

I thought these were basic items that anyone driving a car should know and that were checked in the driver theory test. If you are asking these questions, I would be severely worried about the car passing based on the level of maintenance the asking of these questions would suggest it has received.

    A bit harsh IMO
    - not everyone has done the test in the last few years
    - not everyone has ever had to open their bonnet (may have had family members who could do it then)
    - not knowing where oil and water do not necessarily indicate a lack of maintenance in the car

    Not a bit harsh IMO.

I understood that standard procedure was to check oil and water weekly and before a long journey. It is a very basic procedure and all drivers regardless of age, gender or anything else should be able to do it.

I take your point about not eveyone having done the test in the last two years but my point was not about that, it was about the 2 most basic maintainence items.

If the person is charged with bringing the car to the nct, then I would contend as a car owner they should not be totally reliant on family members to carry out these basic items on an exclusive basis.

BTW, the original post was not intended to offend the OP. However, if you wait (in most cars) for a light to telll you, that you need oil, then chances are its 'new engine' time. Similarly with the coolant.

Its a reasonable request. They will refuse to test a turbo diesel car if the oil level isn't spot on due to the fact they red line them for emission testing

For all we know the OP could be an elderly lady who drives once a month whose son did all of the work before but now is dead and her mechanic is out somewhere and not answering his phone.
No need for peig to know how to top up the oil but when she does ask here to find out how, then don't shoot them down for starting some DIY.

Did I not answer the questions about checking both oil and water?

I then made the point about drivers being responsible for checking those items which I think is most reasonable. It hardly deserves trying to send me on a guilt trip.

Fair enough - I felt it was harsh but lets not fight.
I'm just a grumpy git these days (nicotine withdrawl)

:D No bother. It genuinely wasn't intended to be harsh on the OP.

Don't worry, I am more than a bit grumpy everyday...... and I can't blame it on nicotine withdrawl. :D
