Just wondering of this is okay, I'm looking into wiring my garage at the minute & saw last night that I have a 132amp fuse for the SWA cable running from my house to the garage, would I still need a fuse box in the garage and if I did put one in would the 132amp be a bit big at the other end in the house?

I'm also wondering about another smaller fuse box that was fitted in the house below the big fuse board, looks like one of those consumer units with a black lid/door. Its an IP140 AC400V, what would this be for?

    Thanks.

looks like a priority switch,it prevents you running 2 electric showers at the same time!

    Okay, how about this.

    0005sx.jpg

Its in my meter box. My mobile home was ran from it during construction, could it be used for the garage as in transplant it or would it be tied into the house wiring, I'm trying to learn :o

its more likely to be a 32amp tripswitch not 132amp
that mini consumer unit should be removed from meter cabinet and you can use it as a sub board in the garage
any chance of a pic of the complete meter cabinet
just want to see where nymj cables are connected into

    There you go,

Just looked at the fuses and says MBN132A same as cooker fuse? Probably 32amp, rest are MBN120A = 20amp and MBN110A = 10amp I'm guessing?

    thanks
to meet regs that temp board needs to be removed
the swa cable needs to be connected into main consumer unit(fuseboard)
you can use the removed board as a sub board for the garage
you will need a 10amp tripswitch for the lights though
you will need to protect the swa cable on main board with a switch fuse

currently you have no way of isolating the garage without going out to your meter cabinet
you should have ONE MAIN ISOLATING SWITCH FUSE on main board to disconnect totally ll electrics
your electrical contractor should also seal the meter

is your main t&e cable 16 square(looks small)
where are all them earth cables going
your earth rod cable should go directly from rod to the consumer unit
where is the nymj cable going(bottom left)

Thanks, bear with me, my swa cable is running from my fuseboard to the garage with a 32amp tripswitch/fuse in the house and I was hoping to remove & use the mini board in the meter box as the main board down in the garage with the 32amp in the house as back up if that makes any sense. And as you say add an extra trip for lights?

    Would this work?

yeah that will do it all right
so i assume the swa in the meter box is no longer required
    and also the nymj(bottom left)
remove the nymj tails that are connected into the meter

    NOTE these cables are LIVE
if you are not electrician this is a job for a competent electrician only

No not an electrician & wouldnt attempt to touch myself just like to learn & have heads up when I get the job done.

Anything not needed in the meter box I'll get removed & tidied up,

Will the 32amp in the house do?

    depending on the cable size
if its 3x6 swa 32amp is fine

    How can I check?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,828 ✭✭✭meercat

it will be embossed on the black swa ,repeated every metre or so

I'd get someone qualified in to look at that setup and what you want to do.

It looks "odd" to say the least!!!
