Ive been in Amsterdam three times. Twice in crappy hotels but the last time myself and three others shared an apartment booked through these guys:
    http://lovingamsterdam.com/Amsterdam-apartments-list-en.html

The apartment was called Serenity #2 http://lovingamsterdam.com/Amsterdam-Serenity-2-self-catering-3-bedroom-apartment-Jordaan-Loads-of-space-two-bathrooms-and-a-roof-terrace-id-1162-en.html

It was gorgeous, huge and location was fab. Not too far from the train station and on a street with normal shops and bakerys as opposed to tourist-aimed businesses. It was 555 for the whole apartment for three nights. Might be too pricey for just two of ye but you could easily pay €100 a night for a rotten hotel room. Loads of options of the site anyway...

If its a romantic weekend your looking for, they'll definitely have something to suit.

    Mad to go myself now...

I have been there a few times on business -

When you come out of the central station - the main street is pretty much in front of you . I think its called Danmarck St

There are a few hotels - on this street from the station right up to the Dam - and onto Rokin St - You can see it on Google Maps

There are nice hotels along this street and facing the canal further up.

The Red Light district is on the left of Danmarck St in Niewmarket

I stayed in a nice place on Beurstrat to the left of Danmarck St

If you go further left you are in the Red Light District

You can see some good movie of places of interest and no seedy stuff in

Just to help you out what poster here is referring to is actually called 'Damrak'. (Just Damrak, no Street!)

I personally wouldn't recommend staying there as it's full of tacky bars and restaurants and very touristy and noisy.

Amsterdam is very easy to get around with public transport so I would recommend areas like Jordaan or nearer to Vondel Park, couldn't name any hotels as I lived in Holland for a while but never stayed in a hotel in A'Dam.

Yup, having lived in Amsterdam for a while I can confirm the Damrak is pretty tacky and you will be paying through the nose for absolutely everything.

I would advise staying in the Eden Hotel just off the Rembrandtplein. Really nice hotel right beside one of the nicest squares in Amsterdam. Looks out over the Amstel River too. Close to bars, coffeeshops and a very useful tramline. Roughly 12-15 mins walk to Dam Sq. I lived there for 2 weeks when I moved to Amsterdam first and my parents stayed there when they visited. Top notch.

Last time I was in Amsterdam me and the missus decided to splash out on a decent hotel. We stayed at the SAS Radisson Blu http://www.radissonblu.com/hotel-amsterdam

I can't remember the price but it was a special rate and the room and hotel were lovely. It was centrally located with Dam Square only a few minutes away by foot.

I've spent several weeks staying at the Marriott near Leidseplein. It's pretty nice & central but away from a lot of the tackiness.

Another recommendation would be the Mercure on Noorderstraat, in the Southern Canal Belt. You'd be in the middle of old canals, near Utrechtestraat and the Museum District.

    Stay in The Jordaan area.

As pointed out above, forget Damrak, Jesus:confused:

Easy walking distance to the city centre, full of quirky shops, fashion boutiques, local deli's, small quiet bars and some great eating.

Down @ Vondelpark (10 min tram to CC)

You could do worse than check out the Hotel Bema.

It's in museumplein. So handy for the museums if that's your thing and close to everything else.

Top staff too, it's kind of a bohemian place. And not to pricey.
