Had one of these in 1980 , they were the first of the small car diesels; They were most ecomical and a huge amount of them were sold around that time. Remember getting around 60 mpg on one of them on a run to Donegal. Not many of the diesel ones left as most of them ended up with farmers and had a towbar and a couple of hundred thousand miles. A guy near me has a 1981 one that he uses as a daily driver. Anyone else have memories of these or seen any still motoring :confused:

Old man had an 81 1588cc Diesel Jetta, noisy and slow but tough as old boots.

I'd one in Poland for a few days. Finding a gear was like stirring porridge, but that's more down to the maintenance than the car. I enjoyed driving it. Absolutely no powerband at all, but fine motoring.

There's a red 82-KY one in Tralee used as a daily driver by a man in his 50's or 60's. The car is mint, in showroom condition.

Now that's a very original and clean looking car, however I suspect its a petrol as once again most of the diesels were run in to the ground  Also many of the the diesels had a mark on the front grill with diesel on it.;)

We had a 1981 Mk1 diesel in the family years ago, my clearest memory of it was that it had a drivers seat headrest but none on the passenger side!

Hadn't thought of "my wheels" Now that is a clean diesel one. One of the ones that got away I suspect :D

There's an 81 diesel one on an IN plate local to me that's been worked hard for years, towing around trailers and cars and general horsing around. it's been cosmetically restored now and has an easy retirement. I have a pic somewhere just to dig it out.

The very same engine (at an angle of 54 degrees and with a turbo bolted on) currently powers my van ...with all of 70 horses.

Had the non turbo previously in another van ...de-tuned (for more low down torque apparently, not that there was much of it) from 54 horses in the Golf to 50 in the van ...a glacier would overtake me :D

Ah, she is an 83 alright. Can't say I've ever seen him with the Beetle, but boy do I envy his Golf! In fairness, there is great credit due to him for maintaining it in such fine condition.

i got chatting to the guy that owns the brown golf pictured at a vintage show last year, its minter than mint and has an absolutely astounding 430k on it, the guy said he's owned it for 28 years, what a man!!

He's an ex Divanes mechanic afaik, so he knows what he's at. The Beetle doesn't come out much, I haven't seen it for a good while.

It looks like somebody has made a mistake writing down the number, there's nothing to worry about, it's definitely a CR engine.

There's a mechanic in Newmarket motors who has a 1990 mk2 1.6 diesel in mint condition. I think he's the original owner, or at least has owned it for most of its life.

Nice to see a few originals in Ireland. The road conditions here don't help and in general I would say that we do not maintain our cars as well as our uk friends. It is unusual to find a car several years old with fsh and it is the exception to see someone polishing the car on a Sunday.:p

There's a MkII on Donedeal, if you looked there rather than rooting through and bumping old threads on here you might have more luck.
