Hi guys, just wondering does anybody have any experience of replacing their freelander head gasket?

Mine went on Sunday and have gotten a pretty huge quotation for its repair in Dublin.

If anyone has any ideas about where to get it fixed and how much etc I'd really appreciate hearing your ideas...

    cheers

best advice : dont cheap out, use the MLS Gasket, otherwise, chances are it could well happen again.

i asume its the 1.8 petrol by the way. if it is, search www.forums.mg-rover.org, a wealth of info awaits

Make sure they diagnose why it went too, be it actual gasket failure or a leak in the coolant system, leak from inlet manifold, leak from water pump. Also did you drive it with the temp gauge in the red ?

In fairness it's quite difficult to quote for HG work. The head may or may not need to be slimmed, the liners may or may not have dropped etc etc

Thanks very much for the replies,

It is a 1.8 petrol yes. temperature gauge haD been slightly elevated for a few days but nothing serious at all. The car was driving perfectly and then just cut out when driving. I actually thought that it was the alternator.

Have been quoted 1200 for repair. The previous owner installed a seperate fan in the jeep and apparently now those wires ahave been melted away. Mix of water and oil as well.

1200 seems a little bit keen, but as above, its hard to judge without knowing condition.

is it with a garage now?

its worth baring in mind the longer you drive it with HGF the larger risk you run of damaging more components and raising the repair bill

If it actually cut out due to HG failure (ie lack of compression) it may well be rightly fecked unfortunately, still fixable but a right mess. Also if the gauge was slightly elevated for a few days it must have been using a good lask of coolant, head is more than likely well cooked, the K does not like a cooking at all.

Anything over half way is indicative of a problem ;)

Thanks again everyone for the replies.

The temp gauge was only 1/3 of the way up thats why I was so suprised it happened.

Yeah the car is in the garage at the moment got it towed to one beside my house but I have spoken to them dont trust them in the slightest. although they have advised me not to replace it , just buy a new car. Thats not an option for me but I wont be paying what the suggested either. Its timing belt and plugs were replaced a few weeks ago.

Thats why I wanted to get a few opinions here so thanks. will be moving car from garage in a few days and will see then.

    thanks again

May well not be cooked at all so :)
Probably need a new stat too though, at a minimum.
