I'm recruiting for a nutrition study based in UCD and looking for a few Boardsies to take part.

In particular, we're looking for Caucasian men and women aged between 40 and 65 years. To take part, you must be healthy (BMI of less than 30) and not on any prescribed medication.

The study is a 4 week dietary intervention designed to determine if consuming vitamin D enriched mushrooms will increase vitamin D levels. We are interested in vitamin D as recent research suggests that vitamin D may reduce the risk of several diseases including heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

During the study you will be asked to consume one of the following:

    1) mushrooms with high levels of vitamin D, or
    2) normal mushrooms, or
    3) a vitamin D supplement, or
    4) a control supplement

We will collect a blood and urine sample at the start and at the end of the 4 week intervention. We will also ask you to record what you eat for 3 days and we will provide you with feedback on your dietary intake at the end of the study.

If you would like to take part or for further information on the study please contact: nutritionresearch at ucd dot ie. If you'd rather get in touch by phone, PM me for the contact number.

PS I've contacted the mods for permission prior to posting.

Damn, if you I were 17 years older :)

Not only do I love mushrooms, but I also a a huge believer in supplementing Vitamin D3 above most others.

Very best of luck with it. I would be very interested in seeing the results when they come out. Was thinking about applying for MA in health ed and prom in NUIG for a while and doing a thesis on D3 would be right up my alley.

    That's a pity..

It is really interesting alright.. and I'm looking forward to seeing the outcomes myself.. will definitly let you know how things go once it's all done.. here's hoping we get a few volunteers first! :)

I missed the 40+ bit, but I'm on the other side of the country so probably wouldn't work anyway.:)

What's the research question out of interest? Just be aware that it takes 12 weeks for supplemental vitamin D to fully kick in all it's forms. PM me I have dozens of papers on this as I was originally gonna do my thesis on D.

We're interested to see if consuming the vitamin D enriched mushrooms will increase vitamin D levels in the same way as a vitamin D supplement would. Previous research carried out here in UCD shows significant increases in blood concentrations of vitamin D following 4 weeks of supplementation.. so that's why we've decided to go with a 4 week intervention..

What is it that you're doing yourself?

Wrong age but great to hear any research into vitamin D supplementation. Very much needed with our weather!

Please come back with updates on how the study is going.

Ah, 'tis only the immune response that takes 12 weeks to kick in so that's grand. I'm only doing a trial on retrospective data for diabetes at the moment, but I hope to embark on a clinical trial this year.
