By the gods we need some goddamn legislation in this country in regard to exotic pets.

is it illegal to own any of those listed ?

I would have thought so seeing as Barn Owls are endangered. And how do these people keeping getting ahold of wallabies?

Have you actually seen that many Wallabies for sale on DD?

As you say in your opening post though, its legislation thats needed. Yes, they are advertising on Done Deal, but if they didn't advertise there, they would just go elsewhere. The people that own DD do seem to have some morals and scruples about the animals advertised, unlike most, if not all, of the other sites.

The don't actually talk to a person when you put an ad on DD, and if you consider how many sections there are to it, they must get hundreds of ads put on every minute.

There are very few laws here I believe regarding owning exotics.

You need a license to own a bird of prey afaik.

I dont really see much of a problem with the ad, one thing that stands out is the sheer number of Animals they are selling. When I read the title I was imaging something shocking along the lines of the guy selling the Boxer puppy when he hasnt a clue about the dog(seems like he stole it and was trying to sell it on trough Donedeals).

I would guess all these animals where bred in captivity, I am not against Exotic pets at all as long has the owners know how to provided the correct diet and an enclosure somewhat close to where the animals came from.

My problem with owning exotics is when people are selling them. How many people in Ireland really know how to care for a barn or eagle owl, or a wallaby? And lets not forget that whole fiasco at that birthday party with the poor wallaby. I just pray that, like proper dog breeders, they are extremely careful about who they are selling to. Cant help but doubt it. I mean, if you need to get a licence for a dog, surely you should have to get a licence for an owl or a wallaby? Or a crocodile, or caiman, which are on donedeal far too often as well.

I dont think it legislates against owning an 'eagal owl'.

Looking at the ad it strikes me as someone who kept these animals as pets or had some kind of a petting farm.

How do you know it's not someone in financial trouble that has to sell them? Or they are emigrating? Or that they are going to do thorough checks on potential buyer in order to see if they are serious & responsible about the care & upkeep needed?

There's plenty of dodgy ads on DD, but I think you picked one that might just be genuine.

I know that there are dodgy ads on donedeal, I report dozens of them a day. My main point is that this country needs some legislation in regards to exotic pets. These animals should not be brought into this country or sold as pets, whether for a petting farm or not. And how many petting farms have barn owls and eagle owls and wallabies?

there was a marmoset on there a few days ago (looks like the advert is gone though) being kept in a parrot cage by a clearly inexperienced paniced pet owner trying to get rid of their new pet as quickly as possible after they realised the specialist expertise required to keep it

I agree, we need legislation in this area - seems to be a free for all when it comes to keeping wild animals in captivity. It makes a mockery of the dog licence - a licence to keep a domesticated pet, but you go buy a few chipmunks and let them loose when you're sick of them. Countries like Australia and New Zealand have the right attitude, they control import of 'exotic' pets.

I think you have to be realistic about this. The animals are going to be sold at the end of the day. If its not done deal its going to be somewere else . So whats the point of boycotting done deal ?

If Donedeal were to stop , you going to have another company pop up and do it in its place.

Its just lazy protesting in my honest opinion.

I must resist the urge to ask for a price on the wallaby :o

I think the ad is legit enough, I wonder how strict they will be on homing. I would like to think that if a suitable home cannot be found the animals will be donated to a pet farm, or a bird of prey sanctuary etc.
