Shaving the middle part of a tash?

I am trying to get a neat enough sort of goatee type thing (not in the traditional George Michael sort of way) but like Leonardo Dicaprio's goatee in the Departed. So I've been trimming it with a scissors around the chin and jaw where it gets long. The hair above my lip grows in the middle also and I have shaved this middle part to separate the tash in two. Am wondering though am I supposed to do this, or is this supposed to be natural? Feel a bit silly and vain shaving the middle part. I think it does look better and neater but is this normal?

    Thanks

It's down to preference really I think.

For awhile (over a year) when I grew my goatee first I shaved that part, but then let a full beard grow out, before getting rid of the facial hair altogether last September.

Mine was a little like Brandon Flowers'

Ha must give this a try for the laugh. It looks like it would be awkward to shave the middle part with a normal razor. Is there any ways to do it without turning the blade sideways and cutting yourself or it just hit or miss?

What kind of blade/razor do you use? No need to turn the blade sideways - just a downward stroke but you will probably need to angle the razor a bit and probably only use approx half the width of the blade head.
