Just a thought, but is Parnell Bridge in Cork the only bit of road in Ireland where people drive on the right ? I know its only for 100m but it's a bit weird.

You mean people drive on the right in both directions there? Why?

I've seen it in the odd multi-storey car park too, although i'm not sure if that counts.

Mainly due to the one-way street setup around the bridge.

Having people drive on the right hand side crossing the bridge means that you don't have to cross over other traffic. Makes the junctions flow better.

I was going to say the top of Harcourt St but sure they got rid of the "inbound" lane for the luas.

Is the other lane (at the bottom right of the picture) for traffic going in the same or opposite direction?

Isn't most of Cork city centre one-way so you can hardly call it driving on the right? I see your point about that bridge but as another poster said you get that in a lot of multistorey car parks also.

well Washington St, Grand parade and patrick St are two way so Id say most of Cork City centre is NOT one way. You dont notice the lanes on the bridge TBH....its quite safe and logical with no likelihood of a crossover due to the island.

There was a sign in French in Cork Airport for years telling people to drive on the right. Someone mistranslated. Boardsie Rymus had pics for a while on his blog.

I've been driving over that bridge for over 40 years and never gave it any thought.

They are bringing in "drive on the right" in 2012 forCars and light commercial goods. HGVs and other larger vehicles will be brought on board in 2013.

You still drive on the right on Charlotte Way and onto Harcourt Street opposite the Luas stop, coming from Richmond Street.

Wouldn't consider it driving on the right tbh, it's more two one-way roads side-by-side (going from what I can see anyway)

It's a variation on the Polish/Irish/Kerry joke which said that they were going to gradually switch from one side of the road to the other, odd-numbered vehicles would switch in the first week followed by the even-numbered vehicles in the second week!

All the roads around where that photograph was taken are one way, and when I lived in Cork I drove that way loads of times and you never even notice it.

I had my first crash around there ... after crossing the bridge (right hand lane where that van in the picture is driving) take a sharp right and you can go into a car park along the quay. When I was leaving the car park (the exit was on the other end of the car park) and stopped waiting for a gap in traffic, a numpty drove into the back of my car. Some scuffing on my crappy bumper (barely noticed it really) and he had a broken headlight and damage all along his bonnet. :pac:

IIRC there is a small section of road in Youghal where you drive on the right which is part of the one way system in the town. Must be only in Cork where this occurs;)

There is, and I'm not even 100% sure its down to the one way, from memory there's no specific justification for it being backwards.

IIRC, it's down as one of the shortest dual carriageways around - the one in Youghal that is.

I must have driven over that bridge hundreds of times and I've never once noticed that I was driving on the right. Like a previous poster said, it's a really logical layout so you don't really have to think about it, but still.....weird!

Capel Street Bridge in Dublin was like that, before they reversed the flow on the Quays...
