Mobile broadband wi-fi router

I have mobile broadband with O2 and would like to change from using a USB dongle to a wireless Wi-Fi router. This would be handier and would also allow me to share the connection with my iPhone when at home. The thing is that Vodafone offers the router for ~40 quid whereas O2 charge 90 quid. I don't want to spend more than 50 quid so I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a router independently and use it with the O2 mobile broadband sim card. I'm guessing not but sure there's no harm in asking. Another option might be to get a better plan for my iphone and use this for tethering so that I can dump the mobile broadband plan but this appears to involve jailbreaking the phone and does not appear as seamless to use. Any thoughts?!

Thanks... Thought that thread looked familiar... Reminder to self: after going to the bother of seraching the forum before posting, I should read all of the thread! Looks though like the routers offered by network providers are good value for money so given that they have built in batteries (as far as I'm aware anyway) which is handy if you need to go on the move etc.
