    No.
You can have your own HDD recorder for Freesat/FTA. Not for pay Channels. There are now even some PVR with HDD and BluRay recorder/Replay. Also DVD is inherently obsolete now as it doesn't natively do MPEG4 SD or HD and any new purchases for Satellite or Terrestrial need to support MPEG4 SD and HD.

Analogue input HDD or DVD recorders to record Sky via SCART (SD only, ever) still are in some shops as old stock. They are obosolete. The Analogue tuners often included will be no use in less than 2 years in all of Ireland and UK. You should thus be able to negotiate a big discount, more than €80 is too expensive now.

Yesterday I bought an LG DRT389H digital DVD recorder at Argos:

I am aware that it cannot receive Freeview in my home area, Cavan. How exactly can it be used to record FTA channels on the Sky SD Digibox?

Tune the satellite signal into the recorder. You can the record whatever is on that channel. But you CANNOT watch another channel satellite while recording.

You can get a full refund on that as it is sold as having a Tuner. It's not fit for purpose under Irish Sales of Goods Laws.

Same rules as TV. They can ONLY sell it as an Analogue Video Recorder, Not a Digital or Tuner based recorder.

Similar situation to TVs sold that are not compatible here

    and

In fact the Legistlation is a bit grey, You are entitled to Repair, Replacement or Total Refund (not Credit note). The legislation doesn't say who decided which you should get.

There will be no Irish Digital DVD recorders. Just HDD and ones with Blu Ray. DVD Video doesn't support HD or MPEG4.

Presumably, it could be used to pick up the Freeview overspill after NI DSO.
    I've 2 more questions:
Can any brand of scart cable (e.g. Sony) be used to connect a Walker TV to the LG DVD recorder that is the subject of this thread?
Can a Technika DVD recorder be used to record RTÉ, TV3 and TG4 on analogue and Saorview?
