it is believed that inlight of the hike in farm accidents the health and safety authority are to step up inspections on farms, however it is believed they will be mainly concentrating on the south and east. do you think this is justifiable and what is your opinion on this issue??

My opinion , they are planning to visit 3000 farms in 2011, if they prevent 1 death or serious injury it will be a job well done

I had an inspection 2 years ago while trying to finish a shed for FWMS and asked him to come back. He came back 2 months later and pointed out a few things that i hadnt considered to be a risk. He checked all pto's and spotted one cover on its last legs. I wouldnt have spent the time or looked to that degree at the cover. Its not a big deal and as snowman said, if it saves one life or prevents a serious injury then i would welcome the guy back with open arms. NOW is the time to check things guys. Before work gets busy and we have time to fix things. No more accidents...not this year....not any year:(

Had an inspection from the HSA last year. The guy was there about 40 minutes, looked over all the obvious things, made two recommendations, was very reasonable about the whole thing. It helped that I had a completed farm safety statement to hand - it just so happened I'd done one a few months previously. It was worth the effort as it made a good impression :).

It's working already.. I spoke to two lads recently who were both talking about making changes and buying PTO guards, these lads wouldn't have considered this a year ago..

Hopefully the inspections will proliferate further than the south and east, and that they continue to have a reasonable approach.

News of a few farms inspected in lots of areas would drive changes through the fear of being inspected, this would have a better bang for buck than trying to do all farms in a smaller number of localities.

Does anybody know what proportion of the people that died on farms last year were over 65?

Taking chances on farms, and mocking people who take safety seriously is about to go the same way as drink driving.

There is a definite change in people's attitudes.

what powers have inspectors to penalise farmers.

The inspector has serious powers and is not to be taken lightly. It's better to take the approach they are there to help you than penalise you.

Once you get into trouble they can draw a whole other raft of legislation on you.
