Faked NCT...possible??

Havent a clue when it comes to cars but have a bit of a problem ...

Got a 00 polo, 56000 miles on it in august from a local dealer, NCT'd untill january 2012

it was left in the driveway for the first two months and then hardly driven at all with the weather and the fact im still learning, but I have noticed a few times oil patches on the drive-way, seems to only be leaking when it isnt driven for a while and also a friend thinks the threads on one wheel are particularly worn down, they dont see how it would have passed an NCT with that wheel and suspects it was NCT'd with different wheels??

Basically thinking of getting a pre-NCT check done and if it doesnt pass that going back to the dealer to pursue it further since it is meant to be good for another year

dont have any warranty but they said that within 3months or a certain amount of miles they would fix any problems, it was also the dealers garage who NCT'd it and i was the only owner between then and when i bought it

Wondering if anyone has any advice? would i have a leg to stand on with the dealer if there is something wrong with it? should it be leaking oil if its was NCT'd? is it possible to fake an NCT which my friend thinks was done?

    Any advice/opinion greatly appreciated! :)

realistically your probably pissing into the wind.

id just repair the car and move on.

standard of nct testers and car dealers very greatly, making a comeback against either is very difficult

I don't think the NCT will pick up on an intermittent oil leak. My car wouldn't have passed if it did.

Wheels could have been swapped to pass the NCT, common way of passing a car.

even if i spelled vary wrong

Don't think you have much to stand on here.
A small oil leak isn't cause to give car back, neither are worn tyres (this is something you should have inspected before buying).
Tyres are sometimes swapped for NCT, this is why you must inspect them when buying.

You've had the car for several months, this is something you should have addressed immediately. Dealer will just claim it might have started leaking since you got it.

Anyway, take it back but don't expect wonders.

Btw, the leak could just be the oil drain plug not tightened enough at the last service, or something else. A mechanic will know.

Tyres should have been a bargaining tool for you when buying. THe oil leak may or may not have been there when going for the test. A minor oil leak is hardly a major issue on an 11 year old polo.
Get the leak looked at and buy yourself a set f tyres

Also never ever ever do any thing called a pre-nct test. It's a money making scam. A pre-NCT test could tell you the car is going to pass the nct with flying colours the very next day, but when you do the test the following day you'll fail on prob 5 different things.

I know your car doesn't need an nct but just for future reference cos you seem to think they are genuinely good :D

As for the leak, it's not too much of a prob to have repaired and the place might even do it for ya if you explain nicely and they have goodwill etc.

Tyres as mentioned get swapped to pass an NCT, I've done it myself tbh.

Or the tyres could have been worn in the 12 months since the NCT was supposed to have been done...

Exactly, I have a car with a cracked CV Boot, Seat belts that won't retract properly, both of which should have failed the NCT, and didn't.

    So fix them.

Is that an NCT fail? every car i owned over 100k odd miles had this problem, i tested all of these cars and never failed on that.

What exactly do you mean by 'it was also the dealers garage who NCT'd it'? The NCT test is carried out by an independent company, not by regular garages who service and buy and sell cars. If you have some kind of cert. with a garage's name on it, it's not worth the paper it's written on and is certainly not an NCT.

In answer to 'is it possible to fake an NCT which my friend thinks was done?' the answer is 'yes', a poster here a few weeks ago had that experience when midway through his 'NCT' he got a notification to say that his next test was due, he had bought the car from a dealer with a fake NCT.

Do the NCT still send out notices that tests are due? I haven't got one in years?

Bingo. Could even have been tested up to six months early either way alot could have in that time. Beside Nct's only test so much.

Good point, possibly he got suspicious, enquirered if the cert. was genuine only to be told that instead of having 12 months or so to run that it was up the following month which meant the piece of paper he got from the dealer was a forgery. Either way he got a fake NCT.

For the belt, pull it out and spray both sides with silicone. Do this a couple of times and work belt out and in.
    Probably just a dry roller.

No I was right the first time, he did get a notification, here's the thread....

OP, I think this answers your question about whether a fake NCT is possible.

Thanks for that will give it a try the bf's car is going in tomorrow and the drivers belt doesn't always retract properly.

Tried the silicone on the seatbelts and it worked really well, the drivers belt tended to not retract much at all and now it's retracting properly, thanks for the tip Biko!
