Pharmacists at Boots in Ireland will provide emergency contraception to the public from Wednesday without a presciption.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0110/pill.html

will boots advise about side effects, sti checks that will be needed, medical history?...etc

Don't get me wrong its about time this was made available without the €50-60 doctors charge..and it's about time Irish attitudes changed in this area.

I think it was more advising people to go take an STi check if they are worried about emergency contraception. Not having an STi check prior..

    Finally!

It's absolutely ridiculous that you have to go to a doctor to get it. In England Superdrug and some other chemists have a program in which you can get the morning-after pill for free if you fill out some forms, with the max amount being in or around £30. Over here? Close to €100 when you take into account that the GP visit alone is €60. And of course they'll provide you with all the information and risks.

Great news about time, and will save 50 squids on going to the Doctor when all you needed was the pill in the first place, although its better not to have the need in the first place, but it happens!!

your assuming that the only people who use the morning after pill are people having one night stands with strangers

    thats a pretty massive assumption

They're pharmacists, how are they doing to help with the Ford Focus STi's notorious issues with it's head gasket?

it may come as a shock but contraception is not 100% effective, condoms can break etc.

    Yes.

Pharmacists at Boots in Ireland will provide emergency contraception to the public from Wednesday without a presciption.

The morning-after pill will be provided after consultation with the pharmacist in a private consultation room.

Emergency contraception has been licensed for use in Ireland since late 2001. However, until now, women required a doctor's prescription.

The service will be available in all Boots pharmacies around the country.

actually i was referencing one night stands where the condom broke with that addition to my list,

if you know your sexual partner that well and take the morning after pill you wouldn't need an sti check so that option wouldn't apply to you, but it is still one that would have to be considered when handing out the MAP.

About time. I've only ever had to take the MAP once and it was a bloody nuisance. It was a Sunday so my GP was closed, had to drive ages to some clinic at the hospital. When I got there they told me I had to ring for an appointment. I asked were there any available and they said yeah there was one in 20 minutes and I asked could I not just make the appointment there and then and they told me I had to go outside and ring! Wtf?!

Anyway, it's not something that I hope to have to take again but at least the option's there to get it without all the hassle.

Windsock "Stinger, its 72 hours though, could have waited till Mon."
(don't know how to quote other posters properly:confused:)

Not exactly true - it has been estimated that levonorgestrol prevents 85% of expected pregnancies overall. Efficacy appears to decline with time after intercourse (95% within 24 hours, 85% if used between 24 and 48 hours and/or 58% if used between 48 and 72 hours). Efficacy after 72 hours is unknown - implantation may have occurred.

This is a positive step forward in my opinion. I do not fully agree with the sentiments of the medical council - a pharmacist is equally trained to provide this medication and is often a source of information for GP's about medications, doses, side effects etc so of course they will give advice. All in all, they are a more accessible point of contact for the 'patient' which is of paramount importance when dealing with a drug where early ingestion is crucial for it to work.

I think it may be useful however to set up a network in order to monitor its usage - one which involves both GPs and pharmacists (possibly if someone is obtaining it frequently, they could be referred to the GP for oral contraceptive advice etc). Obviously, many issues would have to be ironed out but it would be favourable to the current antiquated system.

I don't think Boots themselves can just decide to offer a prescription drug "over the counter"* so I imagine the laws must have been relaxed in this regard by the PSI or HSE.

I assume, if this is the case, that it will be available in all pharmacies soon.

*I know its not strictly OTC, just easiest to word it that way.

Very much doubt the smaller local pharmacies will start doing this - hell there's some that I've been into that still tut and tsk when I go in and buy condoms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭hobochris

It would be good if they did this with the regular pill as well. A Pharmacist is more then qualified to check someones blood pressure.

Anything out of the ordinary they could Refer to a doctor, but most cases women going to the doctor for the pill only serves to line the pockets of GP's.

Not to mention It means that perfectly healthy people are left sitting in a waiting room for up to an hour with sick people.

This is great news, and a long overdue service in this country. In some circles, pharmacists are wholey underestimated in terms of medical knowledge and qualifications. They are more than able and willing to advise regarding matters of healthcare, sexual or otherwise...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭Sulmac

This is fantastic news and long overdue.

The morning after pill has been available over-the-counter in Northern Ireland since 2005 and, amazingly, women aren't accidentally overdosing themselves with it. It's over-the-counter in most European countries.

The GPs are just pissed that an easy source of revenue is going to be taken away from them. Boots' stores are usually open a lot longer than doctors' surgeries, including on weekends and public holidays. This will make a worrying situation a lot easier for thousands of Irish women.

Fair play to Boots, I hope more pharmacies follow suit.

For those wondering about the legal standing of this move, RTÉ states:
It says it is able to do legally under a patient group direction. This allows its medical director to instruct non-doctors on following certain protocols.

Has there been any? It could be along the same lines as when Virgin Megastores sold condoms at the desk ages ago in Dublin. There were no changes in law, but they went with it.
