A week isn't nearly long enough to find a good car in that price bracket, IMO. I've found a couple of good, cheap cars for friends recently and it generally took me 3 weeks+. Impatience costs when you're not spending much.:)

ah nah I think a week should be plenty of time, sure a car now is not gonna change in 3 weeks. Even if i cud pick up a piece of dirt under 500 to do a few months. Need it for work until i have time to buy a new one

It takes time to find the right car, there are a lot of money pits out there. If you don't know much about cars then the best advice is to find a friend who does to help you. Failing that, buy privately and only look at cars that have FSH and have had the same owner for a while - that way, you can judge the owner. You'll still need to have a mechanic check the car over prior to purchase.

Id say a weak gearbox is that they are prone to some kind of failure once it ages. Only guessing.

Id go for a pre 2000 Toyota Corrola over the Almeria. I was never a fan of the Almeras and Primera of that era.
    EDIT:
Actually I only say that because apparently the VVTi's used oil. More investigation needed there.

Boras are good but Im not familar with the petrols.

Alfa timing belts are supposed to be changed every 36000 miles so you'd need to check it had been done twice on all the alfas you are looking at. Don't think any of the links you have there mention it.

Also the suspension can give trouble on Alfas, and they can be a money pit if they've not been looked after properly, so you'd have to be certain the car had a full service history.

Ideally bring a mechanic to check any car you are looking at.

the gearbox in 00/01/02 almeras tend to just fall to pieces for want of a better expression. secondhand ones are in such high demand too so its near impossible to get one. over 1000 to fix too. corolla ftw

    If your looking at boras..

Could be a nice clean, set of hubcaps and can probably be got for 2k or very close.

And this isnt the prettiest car in the world but providing he can stand over the mileage id imagine this car has a long time left in it. and its cheap
