Leading on from a little side track in Whelan's rant post just wondering what types of straw people are using

I think the most common are

1 Feed barley straw - bed wheaten straw
2 Feed barley straw - bed barley straw
3 Feed wheaten straw - bed wheaten straw
4 Anybody doing anything with Oaten straw?

From my point of view we were always of the view that you should feed barley and bed with barley but seen as though it is a fair bit more expensive then bed with wheat

Hopefully there is a poll with this so vote away

How do you use your straw 15 votes

    Feed Barley - bed Barley

    Feed Barley - bed Wheat

    Feed Wheat - bed Wheat

    other Oaten straw maybe??

I usually feed wheat, chopped, and bed barley. This yr bedding with woodchip and feeding wheat straw.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

have used oaten straw for bedding in the past and there was not a bit wrong with it.

heard OSR straw is ment to have good feed value though not terribly palitable. needs to be fed as part of a TMR

when using osr or wheaten straw to bed, would you not require more straw to do the same job as barley. i know that they are cheaper, but when you take in the extra cost of haulage, storage, and handling for the extra requirement is there any saving to be had.
stocking density on each also comes into play.
at a guess id say wheaten is 80% as effective as barley, and osr probally not much more than 50-60 %

i dont see any difference in the amount of osr straw i use to bed cows i use pretty much the same amount of bales as i used when i used all barley straw if any thing the cows are cleaner on the osr
i still use barley straw in the calving pens as the osr is a bit rough for them
