Just listening to them talking about these on the radio. Has anyone here ever taken part in clinical or drug trials? Or do you know someone who has? Apparently they can pay pretty well. I don't know if I'd ever be desperate enough to do something like this!

I think about 2 / 3 years ago some drug experiment went wrong and a handful of guys wound up in hospital with all the news reports saying their heads swelled 2 -3 times their size.

All I kept thinking was: "I wanna see what their heads look like!!"

    Scientist: "Hmm.........pleasing taste, some monsterism"

I know some who was living in England at the time who was involved in this trial. He was given a different version of the drugs. Got to sit around play xbox all day and get paid for it while been observed as they were worried about the out comes.

He was a bit of a stoner so didnt give a toss (if he even knew what was going on at the time!)

Heh, did he get decent money for it?

At least he didn't have a printer port installed on the top of his head :pac:

I'm not sure I'd ever want to be a guinea pig for money, in saying that I've been a non paid guinea pig for years on virtually every MS drug.

One MS drug nearly killed me by swelling my heart vessels. My face was swollen like the elephant man when I took another MS drug ....tysabri.

I know a few people who have done it! Soem of my friends in college took part in a drug trial for diabetes. Whatever was in it, it turned out they all started feeling nauseous and began fainting. They were taken into the hospital and were told that they had to stop taking the medication immediately. I can't remember the details fully as it was a long time ago but they received 4500 euro for it!!!

I took part in a smaller scale one myself for a new toothpaste (I was too scared to do the bigger trials). It was to get rid of stains on the teeth and you were meant to get 70euro I think total (10 euro at each stage). I was told I couldn't participate after my second check up as it turned out I didn't have any stains on my teeth but I still got 20 quid from it. :o

It wasn't a case of desperation I guess but easy money when you're in college. I'd say they're happily preying on this in the colleges tbf!

Do not do it. It is not worth the risk. Your life could be ruined. I'd only take part in a trial if I was dying and it was for some novel cancer drug or similar.

Bet you felt great after that though! :D Especially if you had a friend who was kept on! :D I'd be calling them a manky fcuker! :D

I'd do it, but currently wouldn't be able to given I am a carer so have to stay relatively sober most of the time. And always be available.

I'd participate for something relevant to me. I've psoriasis which, joy of all joys, can't be cured so I'd be curious to see if a new treatment would work and get paid to boot. How the hell do people even get into these tests in the first place?

    Don't do it OP!

Though it does pay pretty well, there are serious side effects!
A few years back, my sister signed up for one of these trials, soon afterwards she developed a fine tuft of hair on her chest, this black mane grew right the way down to her balls!

(earning her the nick name Susie Sporran!)

YA that one is meant to be a real gem, 1000/1 chance it will kill you but Elan are allowed to sell it because it can be such a help to the worst cases. In fairness these people should have access but this drug should be regulated better.

I was having a google, there are a few websites, such as this one.

Doesn't seem like a whole lot of them go on in Ireland compared to other countries.

Icon are involved with this in Dublin, as far as I know they are phase 3 trials so they would be relatively low risk. To be honest though I'd know a bit about this industry and I'd advise just getting good at gambling or something instead because there are some absolute horror stories about trials.

    Ow!

As for how they sign up, I imagine a guy in a lab coat and a clipboard walks up to a stranger with "Hey, wanna take some drugs and make money while you're at it?"....................or probably some adverts you'd find handy enough on ze web.

Mam and Dad told me the birth control drugs are crap, left me feeling somewhat unwanted this morning!

1000 in one is a chance I was "happy" to take as my MRI scans were showing that the MS was getting to a tipping point. I took that drug for 5 months, everytime I took it I felt like my body had been nuked, it does need to be better regulated.

I was offered a trial a year or so ago for a drug for Diabetes, at the time though I was deemed in control so couldn't take part. It wasn't a huge money thing,I think it was over a 10 week period with two overnight stays in the clinic,at €300 per night, there was no payment for the other 9 weeks. I would have had no problem taking part even without payment, seeing as I have Diabetes, not so sure about other trials though.

Ha ha yeah I was in stitches considering my friend DID stay on and I was the smoker and they said my teeth were lovely! :D

I don't think I'd do it now but if I had the chance to do a better paid (higher risk) one in college I prob would have. As I said my friend got an awful lot of money. It's all heavily monitored and the doctors stopped the lads taking the meds as soon as they saw it was having negative side effects and they still got paid the full whack.

We were sent emails and we'd see posters around college for it. There was always a number to call and then you go and they do loads of check ups and tests with you to see if you would be eligible to do the test or not.

Woman rang in the radio show there saying that her son and his friend did a drug trial when they were in college around 20 years ago. Both of them died from cancer around the same time 12 years ago. Could have been completely coincidental; they both had different types of cancers and the mother didn't know if anyone else from the trial had died, but it must be horrible for the families thinking that if only they'd stopped them they might still be alive :(

I can't believe I'm the only one saying this:

OP: You should totally do it, it's easy money!

    Kind of odd coincidence though…

It’s not something I’d think about doing. Jesus, I worry enough about my health as it is. If I did a trial I’d be a friggin wreck after it, imagining all sorts.

Took part in a chemo drug trial in 2006 - was for chemo drugs that were previously in use but not all together for the cancer of which I am a survivor - had to do it as my chances of staying alive for any length of time were very low. Am very greatful to the team. From what I understand the treatment protocol is more widely used now.
