Folks, if I install an alarm with a GSM card that can say, text if the alarm activates, can I get the Sim myself from an operator? , or are they only available to trade??

You can use your own SIM card. If you are using prepay ideally you should be able to top up online.

Yes you can get an ready to go or a bill pay sim. Make sure the sim will work with the GSM you have plus if is the same network your on you want the sim for check and see what signal strength your getting where you want to install the GSM. Poor signal strength can lead to no messages sent from the GSM. If you register the sim on line you will be able to check the credit plus top it up if needs be. Always make sure you regularly, every 5 months or less to keep the sim active.

prepay simcard seems to be a cheaper option - just ask operator how often you need to topup to have possibility to dial numbers. i have it installed in my home - and i put just a stcker on an alarm with topup expiry date. to get it working you will need also Short Message Service Center, SMSC number - operator can provide it. usually they don't know what it is - ask them to browse google :)I got mine from Poland ( Polish brand) all set ( in english language ) costs about 250 euro what is much cheaper than in Ireland. it can ring or send text to up to 3 numbers. So myself and wife get a message everytime it goes off ( thanks God alarm went off only when we were testing it.) Once you get it setup don't forget to test it from time to time to see if its working fine. Other usefull thing is to go to your neighbours with your number and ask them for their number. - that's what i did , if alarm goes of I can ring them and ask to have look around. I'm not a professional - but I managed to connect it myself, a bit of programming from the PC is required too.
