You'd be doing well to get a copy of them I reckon. It was a bit of an ordeal trying to get my hands on a copy of the 1980 dublin marathon results, forget about a 10k run back in the day. I'd say your best bet is to e-mail the dublin marathon gang, there could be somebody on the organising commitee who could help.

    Thanks Tanguska,

    I know a few DCM organisers...cheers

Don't bother the course was probably short - especially if you got a PB ;)

Your best, or perhaps only, bet would be to get your hands on a copy of Irish Runner or Marathon magazine close to the date of the races you're interested in. I know one or two people who have a complete run of both magazines and perhaps they could be encouraged to look up a result for you if you asked nicely. It might be more difficult to get them to do a general trawl. The information is nearly always out there, it's just a case of tracking it down. I've been able to fine race results from the late 40's in the past against all the odds.

I think there was a Radio Nova race in September 1984 so an Irish Runner from October-November may have the results. John O'Toole (Tullamore) may have won the men's in around 29:25

John O'Toole, there's a blast from the past.
He was from my village and was a bit of a legend around there when we were kids, had a fine moustache too !

I've tried to get a copy of the 1982 Dublin Marathon results ...anyone got them ??? ( or an Irish Runner with the results) ...I ran it but would love to know what my exact time was ...I hit the wall at the bottonm of the Howth road in Fairview and thats about all I remember as a inexperienced 20 y old ...I know they gave out plaques to finishers and it started on Hatch St (where I now work)..we went into the Park the way we come out now, as far as I recall ...and Raheny was like a Tour De France mountain with the crowds ....

anyone else got memories of those early Dublin marathons

Ran it in '83 as an inexperienced 18yo. It was the same course as '82 I think. Started in hatch street, out the sth circ rd and into the park. As a south sider I was lost on the nor side but I remember the crowds. Hit the wall at about 20miles and its a blur from there until leeson st. They were giving out pints of milk at the end - non of this fancy energy drinks in those days. Still have the plaque and finish line photo - I was so skinny then:) About 10,000 started. A 3hr 23min just got me in the top 25%, I'd say half an hour slower would now would still get in the top 25%.

Do you have a rough idea of your finishing time? I have the results of everyone up to 3.08...and the times of finishers between 3.46 and 3.56 as I was amongst them! I found a Neville Vincent if that means anything to you.

Neville is my Uncle who ran a few of them at that time

I am sure it was about 4.05/4.12 sort of time ...was running with a mate from work and we were flying thro Raheny ,Killester as we were both from there so lots of friends and family ...but we both smashed into that wall . the last couple of miles are a mystery ...i have a vague recollection of meeting a mate near Amiens St station and he got me jogging again but I have absolutely no memory now of the finish line (was it on St Stephens Green ? ) or how I got home ...I do remember crawling to the Clontarf Castle that night for a few pints ...I think I got the bus (about 3 stops ) as I couldnt walk ..
There was no real science or knowledge really in those days as to how to avoid the wall or even what caused it ...it was almost considered dangerous to drink water as they said you might get cramp...sure in those days I played rugby and you were told to swill the water and spit it out at half time ( when you think about it now ....!!!! )

funny memories when you look back ...I certainly dont recall even drinking water on my training runs never mind eating anything

Ah that wall in Killester has long since gone...but there is a smaller one at the 4mile mark in the Raheny 5. Sorry I didn't have your result..but you should have run with Uncle Neville. He finished in 4253rd place in a time of 3.51.05!

    JosDel,

I have an almost complete run of Irish Runner magazines at home and can check for any result that may have been published there during the last 30 years as required.

Please send me a PM and I'll get to you as soon as I can.

Give Carol a ring at 01 6232250 ( Dublin Marathon office ) and she should be able to dig out your result.
If this leads to an avalanche of queries, I'll have to start charging a fiver per query :)

Try the National Library of Ireland on Kildare Street.

They have every copy of Irish Runner archived since the first issue in 1981. http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000245437

It's free to browse any magazines and you get to sit in the exquisite reading room.

The NL is obliged to archive all newspapers and magazines in Ireland.

Great times, not a great time though. I remember the bottleneck at the traffic lights at the start, ran the first 13 with a lad from Kildare but he told me to carry on and we'd meet at the finish as he was running above his pace. Crowds were 5-7 deep all round the course, really enthusiastic, great buzz in the City. At 20 miles on the hill alongside Phoenix Park I was flagging a bit but determined to plod on aiming at 4 hours for my first Marathon when the Course 4x4 came along with the big digital clock on top of the cab, next thing I heard was the commentator saying, "Come on Ladies and Gentlemen give a big hand for the Athletes, let's hear it," amazing was he actually referring to me as an Athlete, what a spur and of course I managed to dig in and easily completed the last 6 miles in an adrenalin rush, 30 years ago 14 Marathons, hundreds of Halfs and 10k's and I can still hear that loud speaker.
I think I have the full results, must be in my garage, all trophies, numbers, plaques.parerwork etc was banished to the garage about 17 years ago.

Your marathon time in 1982 was as follows :

Finishing Position 6124 Vincent Peter G.....Time 4:13:26. Out of 11,076 entries only 9,075 registered with 8,750 finishing.
You must have stopped at the cafe for a big fry up.
Great days, how I wish I could do it now.
