My dads had 245k on it when it failed the NCT and was uneconomical to repair for what it was worth.

Engine was still perfect on it tho...

oh yes sorry the 94/95 model. Its the isuzu engine alright i think.
I was always under the impression they were pretty bulletproof but ive benn told stay away from these cars.

The fella telling me there an unreliable car is a bit of a bluffer in general to be honest so..

The 1.7td was an Isuzu unit and quite economical.
Looked after they can do big miles, depending on how they have been cared for.

Orrr would i be better off going for something like an older/high mileage tdi passat/ A4?

No. My grandfather has an 06 Passat with an instrument panel like a christmas tree and is leaking coolant... after 160kms/100k mls.

When you are paying that money the actual car rather than the model is what matter. A well minded Fiat will be a better buy than a dogged Toyota.

Try and get something at the right side of 120k miles with reasonable service history and in good cosmetic condition and you should get your monies worth

if it was a 96 passat he would have no such problems.

Sorry when i say budget i mean up to about 1500. If i could find a decent diesel saloon for the thousand euro mark id be much happier than spending 1500.

Thats the whole reason i was considering a cavalier.

And seeing as your about rover James id never get a decent diesel 75 for that kind of money would i??

You'd see the odd one about advertised for a tad under €2000 but they'd have a large lash of miles on them and you'd be taking your chance. An ole Vectra with the Isuzu lump will be cheaper to fix should things go wrong. I wouldn't recommend a 75 diesel for small money really if you're on a budget.

However, you're in Clare according to your location, you want to spend as little as possible on a diesel and don't mind an old car ;)

This isn't Worlds away location wise and may be worth a look, a set of decent Rover wheel trims (scrap yard or E bay) would make it look much much better. Could be a good buy if she is sound, could also be a heap of sh1te too obviously.

Looks quite straight to be fair, I presume that horrible chrome crap on the taillights could be easily removed, I know it's all too easy to fit. That mileage is quite low and there's no reason to think it's clocked, inside looks quite tidy and clean.

I had a Cavalier TD for several years. Outstanding car, very reliable, very economical, and good performance on the road. I was genuinely sorry to see her go. This in my mind was the last of proper GM cars, because everything after this car became increasingly "electronic" and more unreliable.

Buying one now, you would need to be very careful as the age of these cars means most examples will be high milers and a bit "long in the tooth". Assuming they are not rotten around the wheel arches and the chassis legs, and that the engine is tight, you might be worth betting on one. However, there is no way I would pay anything near a four figure sum for one, no matter how good it was.
