Hi all, not sure if this is the right place for this question so feel free to move it if needs be! My parents have a holiday home down in Rosslare and we used to get the welsh channels along with the Irish but during the summer they disappeared and now we just have rte 1 and 2, tv3 and tg4. Just wondering if there is anything we could get like a freeview box to get BBC etc back? Not interested in sky digital or anything like that as it's just a holiday home. Thanks

Analogue television in Wales was turned off so to get those channels you would need a Freeview box (dependant on reception) or a FTA satellite system.

A lot of people down that way installed freesat systems when UK analogue was switched off,you could get a decent saorview compatible box and use it for Freeview from Wales and Irish DTT also. The Aerial for your UK channels will do for the Freeview but you need another one for Saorview(point it towards Mt.Leinster).This should more than cover you for channels and no monthly payments.

Point the saorview aerial at Forth mountain.

Point the saorview aerial at Forth mountain.

Forgot about that.So used to Mt.Leinster.Freeview reception is very good in the Rosslare area.In my opinion the channels on Freeview channels are better than freesat in terms of decent content, perhaps a combo box would be ideal-best of both.

sorry i know this is an old enough thread but didnt realise people had replied after the first post! Im a little confused, where can I buy one of these combo boxes or freeview boxes? Would I have to sign up to anything and how much roughly would they cost? Id ideally be looking for something that could be installed myself but Ive a really old mitsubishi tv so how would I know if they'd be compatible?

    Sorry for all the questions!!

    Thanks in advance! :)

If they had welsh reception before, then all you need is an mpeg4 tv which will get the uk channels back in crystal clear digital form.
An mpeg4 set top box would do the same or you could also get a freeview hd pvr which is like a sky plus box for the freeview channels without a sub but they are expensive and not what you want if you're keeping the old crt.

An stb would be plug in and play and should set you back anything from 50 to a 100 euro's..

You will need a 2nd aerial pointed at forth mountain for saorview or the irish digital channels.

A set top box would hook up to the mitsubishi via a scart lead.

    Pm sent to you

Thanks, so where would I be able to get one of the mpeg4 set top boxes? Would I be able to get one in curries or somewhere like that and would I be able to install it myself? Also apologies if this is a stupid question but what do you mean when u say I should point the aerial Yo the forth mountain? How would I know if I was doing that?

    • walker make the only approved ones so far but more are due to be approved soon.Yes currys sell them as do power city amongst others if you are based in Dublin.
    • You would need a 2nd separate aerial combined into the cable of your existing one for forth mountain's rte signal.
    • You could install satelite and turn your existing aerial round to forth for RTE's saorview digital channels only [no uk freeview if you do that] but this is likely to cost you as much as the 2 aerial route.
    • If you just want get back the UK channels for now,you don't have to do much as RTE and TV3 etc are still available on analogue for the next 21 months [they go all digital from jan 1 2013].So for a temporary solution, you can get the mpeg4 set top box and use it on your existing aerial for the uk freeview channels and watch the irish channels on the tv itself in the usual old fashioned analogue way.
    • You'll have a year and a half to save up for the extra aerial or sat receiver and dish etc.

Euronics shops also sell the Walker saorview mpeg4 boxes. According to this http://coverage.rtenl.ie/index.php if you are in Rosslare Strand or the Rosslare Harbour Area its MT Leinster you should point your Aerial to.

forth would be better if you can get it and would be essential if you want welsh uk freeview via an aerial, ie without a dish as there are mt leinster versus welsh interference issues.
