    Hi,
WE booked before xmas as I though it would be really popular and fill up quickly it looks like a great event on 3 great courses as long as it not blowing a gale for the 3 days it will be a great experience.

Ya it should be popular.but last year it had to be cancelled due to lack of interest. But the three clubs are puttin more advertising in this year and really pushing it so hopefully it will be busy. 3 great courses and it is good value.

Seems to a reasonable number booked to play Carne on the Monday looks quite enough the other 2 days see there are single spots if u want to take a chance scrubber.

well thats what i make of it. have you booked a full slot or just for yourself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭macdonagh2007

I booked for my self starting in Carn @1.15pm. Very hard to get my playing partners interested. They are already committed with me in playing in the Tullamore Dew/ BlackBush Tournament in June. Like the look of the Dunmore East Golf Classic in early May. might play in that too seen as I have the time off.

Having the same problem myself with playing partners. Probably gonna book to play Carne last as its my favorite.

There's two of us interested in playing this. I'm actually a distance member of Carne. Hearing up there for the last ten days of the month to play hopefully loads of times on the course.

Scrubber, whereabouts are you playing? I'm off 14 and my mate is off 10. Could perhaps make up a team?

Is there much of a takeup from posters here for the event?

i presume you'd need to be fairly handy (low handicap) to play in this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭liam12989

no its all based on hcap iirc..so anybody can play.hopefuly we get the weather for this.should be a cracker and great value too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

The handicap limit for men is 20. And it 26 for women.

Scrubber, I'm gonna talk to mary in the office up there and see can I get the members rate to enter. If she obliges then I'm gonna enter myself and my mate so will give u a shout. Wont know til end of the month.

Never played Enniscrone or Rosses Point. Might go up there for a round on each before the competition. Carne is incredible tho to be honest.

Better value than the great Irish links challenge in May, playing doonbeg, Lahinch and ballybunion ... €545 per person. WTF!?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

no comparison. I've a voucher to play Doonbeg fourball got it for 225euro. And got a fourball voucher for Ballybunion for 200euro.

So for 106euro a man, we're playing both those courses and there's no restrictions meaning a saturday in july or august I'll be playing there.

The Atlantic Challenge in July, green fees alone on the three courses are over 200euro. If u get a discount from the courses, I doubt you could haggle them down to 125euro for the three. Fantastic value. Hopefully the tournament fills up and the clubs get their reward.

Looking at the Carne web site it looks like it is booked up for the monday so could be a good crowd at this after it got canceled in 2010 due to lack of interest.

Anyone recommend accomodation options for this comp, where would be a handy place to stay. looking at heading up from Waterford for this, seems great value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭mike12

Enniscrone is almost half way between the other 2 courses there is a hotel beside the course think its the Diamond coast would still be over a hours drive to the other 2 courses.

Anyone looking for someone to make a team. I would love to play in this and am going to call the organisers about putting me in as a single entrant and pair me up with others but thought I would ask here first.

Just back home after 3 days playing the Atlantic Cost Challenge, Monday played Belmullet (Carne) got off at 1.15pm got of the course 6.10pm !! golfers spraying balls all over the place and not calling the next group through and taking over 5 mins to look for balls....fairways in great shape and the greens were seriously fast. Tuesday in Enniscrone started at 1.15pm again got off the course at 6.10pm....thinking off not going to RossesPoint , play was to slow, balls all over the place...a lot of hill climbers out!! Ball spotters out at holes 2 and 11 only. Fairways were in a dreadful state with 6 inch placing and greens very slow. Turned up at Rosses-Point . Same again started at 1pm finished round at 6pm. No ball spotters, play slow, groups ahead off us not calling others groups through. Fairways excellent but greens not cut. Teams of 3 marking their own card is a recipe for cheating....some big scores from Southern counties!! Played with 2 ladies from Fulford G.C England. who were great company for the 3 days. The tournament has potential with some improvements particularly regarding slow play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭liam12989

how do you think calling a group through will speed up play, when there is that amount of traffic on the course. the weather was grand so i think 5 hours is slow but not painful.
this has the makings of a great great comp. but its only the forst year so changes will happen.

rome wasnt built in a day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭macdonagh2007

We were out in 3 Balls remember and off society tees on 2 of the courses and buggies were permitted so it should have not taken over 5 hours! 1. The starters on the 1st tee should have advised each group to play a provisional ball if in doubt and reminded the players that if they had used up their shots to pick up their balls and not finish out for 7,8,etc.The courses are difficult and with the help and co-operation of volunteers from the clubs to have more ball spotters in the future it will help to speed up play.

Anybody have a list of results.

I'd be interested in hearing how people compare the courses against one another, both in terms of excellence and difficulty.

    Thanks

Looks like Thurles GC had their away day up there.

Carne and Belmullet were excellent but the greens in Rosses were a disgrace. The golf club showed absolutly no respect for the competition or the competitors by not cutting the greens. We played there on Sunday as a warm up to the week and were sure the greens would be cut and in good shape....arrived Monday and they were not cut. They were hairy and uneven Monday, god knows what they were like by Wed. I think the club up there at Rosses are so far up there own ar*e and showed nothing but contempt for the people who played.... On a personnal note I shot 34, 35 and 37 off 5, putted very bad overall but struck the ball very well.

Just back after playing in this and had a great time, all 3 courses were in great condition played Carne on the Monday in good conditions course was playing hard and the greens were really fast not sure how u would have kept a ball on them if it had been windy, all in all not too many blind shots loved the greens tucked away in the dunes bally was find-able and usually playable from the rough teed off 11.40 and were finished in 4.10 so that was good. Enniscrone was tough on Tuesday with a strong cross breeze on most holes they had ball spotters out on the holes where there were blind shots but the round was slow from the start and took over 5 hours to play not really sure why as the rough was not that bad, greens were a good bit slower that Carne they are fairly similar courses but Enniscrone has way more blind shots. Rosses Point was a a different type of course no dunes and flat for a lot of it i thought the greens were fine, conditions were great on the wednesday u could always find your ball in the rough but it was hard to move it out of it very nice course.
Thought it was a great comp and will be back next year only thing i would like to see different was the 3 person team event would rather if it was 2 to score .

what did people think of the three courses all very different in there own way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭Kevinmarkham

I'm surprised by some of the comments on here about the event. I played at 12.44 on each day and knew full well that the rounds would take a minimum of four and a half hours. It actually took five hours at Sligo and Carne and a bit longer at Enniscrone. A competition like this attracts golfers of all different abilities, people who have never played these courses before and others who haven't a clue about etiquette.

I'm sure for next year there will be more spotters on the courses and a vigilant ranger, but this is the first year of the event and as Pat Sweeney (GM at Enniscrone) said - 'it's a learning curve and we'll do things differently next year.'

Unlike other posters, I found the greens to be slow on all three courses. My guess is that they were deliberately a bit slow/hairy so that putts didn't fly off the green - there were plenty of greens where a putt could have kept on rolling almost back to the tee! And at Carne there were a few times where it looked like the wind was going to blow the ball off the green.

I agree that the fairways at Enniscrone were patchy in places, but that's the joy/challenge of links courses - and it explains why there was placing.

I love all three courses, will happily line up for it again next year - despite some dismal scoring - and congratulate Pat Sweeney on a great competition. €120 for three of the best links around... what's not to enjoy.

My only suggestion is that next year, some of the golfers might want to consider suntan lotion. There were so many pink faces and necks out there you could have cooked a barbecue

Ah kevin are you having a dig at me.
    Fore told is fore warned.

It was great fun over 3 days even though my scores were something to laugh at. 23,34,25 and to think I had 13 scratches over the 3 days too:mad:

Based on you outscoring me by an impressive 3 points, I think it's safe to say I wasn't having a dig at you ;).

Actually, I'm not taking a dig at anyone, merely pointing out why it was slow. I doubt many of these tournaments pull in rounds of under 4 hours, especially on such difficult courses.

Agreed with you on everything said kevin.
I would suggest to the organisers that on the first day you play with your team mates then on the second day your name is drawn to play with 2 others within 3 tee times of the time you played on day one (if that makes sense), just to mix it up and to ensure no questions being asked.

Don't see the need for that every 3 or 4 person open is you play with who ever u want so why make it different for this. Think the scores should be returned to the gui. Also think that team events should show up on you GUI record so your club can spot if people are minding there handicaps for open team events.
