Glass shattering

    Years ago in a rented house as a student i awoke to an explosion and was terrified, a glass, half or three quarters full of cold water had exploded in the room. It had been sitting on a small table. The base of the glass didn't shatter so I awoke to the exploding sound and also the water in the base pouring on to the floor. Obviously I was shocked and very upset but never got to the bottom of it.Any explanations as to it's cause?
