Octavia problems

Ok after/during the 1st cold spell my car started having issues starting and now it won't start at all, it is a 2002 Skoda Octavia 1.4 Ambiance with 120,000 miles or so on the clock.

I was starting it every day even when not driving it but i left it for 2 days when i was at a friends house and i came back and it was completely dead not even the door lights were coming on so i jumped it and i got it to the stage where the engine was starting but once i took my foot off the pedal the engine conked and if i kept my foot on the accelerator and kept the key turned it made a kind of whining noise.

So i went and got a new battery as the one i had was 8-9 years old and my dad helped me install it and there is no issues with that anymore but when i go to start it same thing the engine makes one burst and knocks off again and if i keep the key turned it makes the same whining noise, im thinking its the alternator or spark plugs or something but any imput would be welcome.

I am just clutching at straws atm as my regular mechanic has a broken hand atm and until he can take a look im just troubleshooting, and im sure somsone else must have had this problem before

P.S. This car has started every time up till now in the 3 years i have had it.

I got them changed around 6 months ago before i put it through the NCT when it got a almost full suspension overhaul bushels/afew springs etc.

Also i have taken them all out and dried them (anyone who has tried to get at octavia sparkplugs knows how hard it is to get them loose) and i also sprayed them with wd-40 when they were near frozen.

I just noticed now there is a light on the dash with a car with a key symbol undernearth the wheels hmm , i will be brining it somewhere tuesday i think as it's all abit over my head :P
