locking threads

firstly this is more of a query than a bold statment or gripe.

the two threads that were locked today were both 'cull' related as opposed to 'sport hunting' so on that basis i understand forum rules close thread.

in the badger thread the op was a bit vague i know but i dont think there was anyone who was promoting the badger cull. in the cormorant thread there was interesting debate and to be honest alot of factual links etc.

had the badger one been allowed to continue there most likely would have been discussion on the deer/badger tb debate. i think that this too would have provided interesting and factual debate.

the old saying goes that you learn something new every day, ive learned an awful lot on boards from reading other peoples posts. . . and i think both these threads could have thought one or two people something new.

my point is this, instead of locking the thread maybe post people in the right direction, or tidy up a few things. . everyone on here would know more than the average joe about wildlife so would have some creedence to their points of view. . . its not as if people were being offencive or promoting mindless killing of species. . . we were mearly debating these points.

also i hope i havent annoyed you john given your success with foxes and me being as ginger as they come its with apprehention i write this:D

lastly i too think it would be hillarious if you locked this thread john:D

I'll say it again :) The Hunting forum is part of the Shooting forum, which itself is part of the Sports category, which is part of Boards.ie.

These problems sometimes surface as people tend to not use the other forums and treat Shooting as a standalone website in and of itself and often with only the view that it's pro shooting. Choosing the right forum to post a thread is the first point of departure in creating a good discussion IMO.

    :)

Farming may have been more appropriate for the Badger thread (the crux of the badger issue is usually TB in cattle), and Angling for the Cormorants thread (again the crux of that issue was perceived damage to fish stocks). As they're both protected I don't consider Shooting the correct forum to post about them. I do understand the point relating to interesting discussion, just that they need to be in the proper place. As can be seen from the Cormorant thread, neither Nature & Birdwatching nor Angling wanted it because of what it turned into. That's a part of why I locked the badger thread. I could see it moving along down the same road. The other part of it was cormorants was given leeway despite reports and descended quickly into a mire that no one wanted.

Now, whether to lock this or not, oh, thoughts of the hilarity of it :D

I think the lads on here that only post in the hunting forum value the opinions of other hunters on all topics plus have built up a rep ore of sorts with each other & come on for a chat with people they feel have opinions of worth etc

I think your point is valid though John in that this all falls under the umbrella of boards as opposed to hunting/shooting type website but when you generally just post in 1 forum that's where you get inclined to forget it's all boards & just post where you Know & also may not want to miss the opinions of those you've gotten to know...

In fairness though the question doyle wanted to know was why 'hunters' wanted a cull on badgers. He said he could understand farmers wanting it. So would that not be more suited here, no? To answer your question doyle, a lot of hunters in the uk believe badgers to take eggs running pheasants off nests for one.
