China flexes military might

Beijing (CNN) -- A jet fighter points up to the sky, a row of missiles line a walkway and revolutionary films are on constant rotation at China's aviation museum on the outskirts of the capital, Beijing.

Occupying pride of place here: the bomber which deployed China's first nuclear bomb.

These are the relics of the Asian giant's military past, but it is also a nod to the might worthy of an emerging superpower.

A red jet fighter catches my eye amid the Chairman Mao paintings: it is the MiG-15 credited with China's first victory in the sky, shooting down an enemy aircraft over the skies of Korea in 1950.

Now, the world's attention is focused on a new Chinese jet fighter, the J-20. Pictures of the radar-evading stealth plane have appeared in recent days, carrying out runway tests. It is the latest addition to China's growing military arsenal.

Considering China is emerging as the next great superpower, would you be concerned about its potential dominance in the world? China insists its arms are defensive in nature... would you trust them?

Didn't we already have a ridiculous war thread recently?

Would I trust China? No, but I don't need to, because anyone with a score of functioning brain cells could work out the reasons why it would be self-defeating of China to militarily attack the rest of the world. Jesus ****ing Christ.

Well would you rather the US holding all the nukes and waving it over everyones heads, or the Chinese holding all the nukes and doing the same?

The only difference is that the Chinese might not stick their noses in as much of their neighbours wars!

I remember being in a pub in town one day, when a wee Chinese man came strolling in with a parrot perched on his shoulder.

The bar man looked up, studied the sight in front of him, and then asked in a rather surprised voice ' holy fook!, where did you get that thing from?'

The parrot then let out an ear piercing squak!..................

And said, ' China, theres fcukin BILLIONS of em!'

Unlike the Yanks, the Chinese have thousands of years of culture and history and therefore have a bit more maturity in international matters. The Yanks however, have been throwing their weight around for far long in the playground. The emergence of China will act as a nice counter balance to the american empire, and will thankfully lead to it's demise.

    Smart idea.

Americas military gaze has never really fallen here so it's easy to think the world is great with them as the lead power. the majority of our planet will be glad to see a counter balance and frankly, so will I.

Idea? It's not an idea, it's an impending reality. That you'll just have to learn to deal with then. China is unique, because over two thousand years ago it built a great wall to keep everyone out. It's a pity today's immature 'superpower' wouldn't follow the same policy.

Who's talking about a way of life here? Fcuk, China's has the worlds biggest market economy. The 'american way of life' you speak of by the way, is largely funded through Chinese loans.

Market economy will forever be changing and for now it is china, who is after them India ? Brazil ?As for The american way of life, it is the american way of life and has been there long before china came on the scene and will be there after this pans out, IMO sometimes USA foreign policy blinds people to the good that has come from that country.

There's no such thing as a commie regime anymore.
China is no more commie than US and neither is US more democratic than china!

In china if you do something the state doesn't approve of you disappear off to god knows where. In US if you do something the state doesn't approve off, you disappear off to Guantanamo Bay, which is not a happy place in the least!

Sure if you're a white person in US, you won't notice anything. But just take a walk down the ghettos of Harlem, San Jose etc. Why are US prisons filled with blacks, latin americans and other minorities??
And then what about traveling through airports where they do random checks at airports and you have to walk through body scanners, they trace your calls, your mails and everything, their media is just a massive propaganda machine.

The whole "american way of life" is just a sham. US is no better than China. Its only because they speak the same language as us, we understand what's happening in US better than what's going on in China.

Infact I'll prefer China as a superpower rather than US because it won't go interfering in other countries matters.

Mark my words, you can be 100% GAURANTEED China will interfere with it's neighbours and further afield.... this is what superpowers do...

On top there's Russia, its not going to challenge Russia. To the east there's Japan, it won't challenge Japan either. It might challenge Korea (dunno if it'll challenge North or South though, South is backed by US but north is Commie).
I don't think there's anything China has to benefit from going down south. Its big enough as it is.

I doubt China will interfere with Afghanistan.

Although China is in fact interfering with India! China is friendly with Pakistan but not friendly with India. So yeah, something might happen there.
India is friendly with Israel, US and Russia on the other hand. India gets most of its weapons from Israel.

Though strictly speaking, today's super power is neither China nor USA, its Israel!!

Israel controls US and most of the big corporations and banks in the world. Israel posses the latest military arsenal, nukes and if the conspiracy theories are anything to go by, the zionists controls World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve, Bank of England and basically most of the big centrals banks of the West. Which makes Israel (or the Zionists) the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world.

If you go by this "conspiracy theory" a lot of pieces fit into place and it explains it very well why there's all these wars going on in Middle East and why US keeps pushing with its war despite it being absolutely broke!
If US was fighting for democracy, it wouldn't be backing some of the worst dictators at the same time and opposing other democracies who don't agree with US's foreign policy!

Very naive thinking. You might want to consider why the Chinese are literally all over every conflict area in Africa right now and are engaging in worldwide cyber warefare without provacation. The chinese talk about not involving themselves in foreign affairs but then go and do the complete opposite. If you honestly believe that having a country like China -with its human rights record, one party government and censorship - in the position of America would have a positive effect on world affairs then you are insane. I'm not a huge fan of America but lets be honest here they're the best of a bad bunch. Countries like Russia or China would be a hell of a lot worse.
China don't like being challenged and are increasingly more demanding and unresponsive to criticism. I honestly don't want to think about how China would react if a September 11th style attack occured on their land. I think it would be a lot worse than America's response. We saw how Putin's Russia treated Chechnya.

Just because China is ruled by an unelected regime doesn't make it any different from US. Sure Obama was elected by a democratic vote but he's just carrying forward Bush's policies. And I'm not going to argue on this because I'm sure you differ here with me. Has Obama ended the war? No. Has Obama ended Guantanamo Bay? No. Is Obama pushing for more war and increasing the national debt? Yes.

US is ruled by the lobbyists who spend millions backing the candidate who agrees to fulfill their agendas best. AIPAC, the Pro-Israel zionist lobby is among the biggest and most powerful lobby in US. If you believe US is governed by the elected representative of the people, i.e. the present, you are very naive. Its the people behind the scenes who run the show!

I don't say China is all happy clappy either. But its no worse.

I don't need to remind you who ended up in Guantanamo Bay. Most of the inmates in Guantanamo Bay are held there illegally (and by illegally I mean unconstitutionally) without any trial. If you believe everyone in Guantanamo Bay is a convicted terrorist, once again you are very naive.

I don't need a source to prove most of US inmates are minorities. Its a known fact. Even the US government admits this.

**** happens everywhere. You can't compromise the freedom of all the citizens of the country unconstitutionally just because of one isolated event.
More innocent people have died as a result of America's "War on Terror" than people died on 9/11. The death toll of the war is estimated to be around a million civilians dead.

CIA does trace all american calls and mails and any electronic communication. It can even trace any calls made by you if it wanted to.

What is the "american way of life" can you define it? Hollywood? McDonalds? Obesity?

All american news has aspects of propaganda. Even hollywood is full of propaganda films.

And I don't need to explain the last bits. We find China "strange" and "evil" simply because we can't understand their language and thus we don't watch their news channels or their media. Instead we watch US media which is full of propaganda.

And I don't need to be naive to say China would be a better superpower than US.

Since WW2 how many wars has US been involved in and how many has China been involved in?
Which country is currently engaged in a war right now?

China would have to do a lot to surpass US in aggression!!

People just sympathise with US because we like their Hollywood, their music and their food. That's the only reason.
Because they're white like the rest of Europeans and they speak English, we automatically assume USA is a much better country than those evil sounding zipper heads!

Look, I know China is bad for human rights. I'm not defending them.
I know US is equally bad.

If I was a muslim in US publicly expressing my opinion about how much I disagree with US's war and how I believe the people in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. have a right to defend themselves against the US army and such, it won't be long before I'll have someone from the CIA knocking on my door.

I can't believe how people can overlook the Wars and Guantanamo Bay and say US is a force for good. Most of the people in Guantanamo Bay are held there unconstitutionally without any trial. They're tortured there and made to live in atrocious conditions.

Yet US is better than China.

As I said, its only a cultural and language (and racial as well) barrier that makes people in the West think US is better than China.

China probably need to do this remember they have borders with Russia and india and pakistan (Kashmere region). It will probably be fine.

    places to worry about
    • Taiwan - they Claim it as part of China

What about the Chinese?? Tibet, the Tinnimon Square massacre etc... Guantanamo, while a sorry state of affairs, is absolutely dewarfed by Chinese affairs...

US has a no better record.

    Guantanamo Bay.
US backed genocide committed by Pinochet.
US backed genocide committed by Suharto.
Displacement of the natives of Diego Garcia to set up a naval base on the Island.
Atrocities committed in Vietnam and Cambodia.
UN embargo on Iraq which lead to the death of a million Iraqis.
War on Terror where its estimated over a million civilians have been killed.
    Abu Gharib Prison camp.

Only country to have used an atomic bomb. Twice!
It has used cluster bombs and incendiary weapons like white phosphorous over civilian population in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

One could go on and on about the human rights violations committed by US in just the past 50 years.

Yet because we like Hollywood and McDonalds, we support the US!

You have put none of this in context... where was that list copied and pasted from? 'US backed genocide'... where did that come from???

It used the atomic bombs BECAUSE IT HAD NO CHOICE... the japanese would have fought until the last man, millions would have been killed.

It is well known Japan was ready to surrender and the atomic attacks were just a sign from US showing the world what it could do if some country decides to 'f*ck' with it. Both countries had massive civilian population and there were no more than 10,000 military personal in either cities.

    What do you mean context.

US bought Pinochet into power after a coup which removed the Salvador Alleande from power who was a popular leader loved by the Chilean people but didn't bend down to US policies.
Suharto was also bought into power by USA.

They both went ahead to commit genocide.

Do you justify Guantanamo Bay? Do you justify Abu Gharib prision camp? What about the use of incendiary bombs, do you justify the use of white phosphorous over civilian population? Do you justify the constant drone attacks over Pakistani and Afghan villages which only ever leaves civilians dead?

Or is the one incident of 9/11 where 3000 odd people died enough to justify the killing of a million people in the middle east?

Its useless arguing with someone who believes everything they watch on the news and read in the papers to be fact.
And I'm arguing with someone over the internet about it...

Things are changing mate. That used to be in the old days.
Also yes, it was the hollywood films and McDonalds which made people go to USA.

Now USA is broke. China is emerging as the strongest economy in the world. Everyone's flocking to China now! Even people from the west!

Its Jobs that makes people go to a country. US had lots of jobs before which is why everyone went there. Now China has more jobs, people are going to China!

Also people in the west prefer to go to USA because its more closer to their culture than China. US speaks english and the food is german, its more closer and similar to home.

If you go to China, you'll have to learn Chinese, which is a hassle for people who can't speak Chinese. While most people in the world can speak some degree of English.

What happens when the millions of Chinese peasants decide they want a decent standard of living and a house and a car and an xbox.

I think there is more chance of China imploding than continue its seemingly endless growth.
