Derren Brown is gay? I'm sure he mentioned a wife at some point?

Oh hell yeah! Definitely watching this.

    The System
    From Wikipedia
Brown publicly came out as gay in 2007 in The Independent's 'I Believe' article. Brown told the paper: "I believe you should always come out; life is so much easier. People generally aren't as bothered by your intimate secrets as you are.

It took me being in a relationship with a guy for a month before I told anyone I was thus inclined. If anything, I was disappointed to learn it wasn't much of a surprise. Possibly my penchant for interior decor had given the game away."

    LMAO

If anyone votes for 'Hero at 30,000 Feet', I'll personally hunt them down and make them pay! :pac:

No, because if you dont like any of them or him

then dont bother looking or commenting for that matter

Not sure which of his shows is my favourite. I'll have to watch them all sometime soon and decide. I was at Enigma in the Grand Canal Theatre and absolutely loved it!

Are they just counting the Events or any of his previous shows?

    just these ones
Hero at 30,000 Feet, The System , The Heist, Messiah, Séance and Russian Roulette Live

i'm guessing because in ''the events'' Derren explained how they were all done so it would defeat the purpose of airing them again
the voting is closed now any way :(

I really like Brown when he's out of character. He's very funny and actually rather sweet.

Tricks of the Mind is a fantastic book, too, he turned out to be a lot more self aware than I expected. His account of inadvertently leaving the house - and then encountering a load of fans - with his willy out had me in tears laughing, as did his description of his look as that of a "gay timelord".

Love his book. Haven't had a chance to get his new one yet though. I really should! Did you use any of the techniques from the book?

I'm thinking that Messiah and The Heist are my favourites (used youtube to remind myself).

I think it's interesting how "forced" his early persona seems in contrast to him now. He seems a lot more comfortable on stage now, and a lot closer to his "real" personality.

I think that's because it's the way that David Blaine was and they were pretty much in competition with him at the time, but when he becomes his own star I guess he doesn't have to be like him.

It's scary to think that Russian Roulette was real! I thought it was fake, like the English police said it was.

"Creative other half" as in his writing partner, or his partner-partner?

    His portraits are amazing.

It's wonderful how much Derren enjoys what he does. That's why he's so so good, I reckon.

Sweet lord. Derren Brown with a mullet. I've seen it all now.

It's amazing how he keeps in contact with people that took part!

    Please be Seance ..

Damnit.. wished it was 'Seance' too (can't remember it at all), but don't mind 'The Heist' either.

    Messiah
He admitted the 'Predicting the lotto numbers trick' was 'disingenuous'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

Not quite - he admitted his explanation of the trick was disingenuous. The distinction is important.

    Uh huh...

That being said, it made Andy Nyman look a bit of a twat.

Not sure if we got a look at his boyfriend in the end. I think 'creative partner' referred to Iain, one of his writers, the guy who was holding the ouija board.

Not sure about the guy on the couch. I think he's said before that Mark (the bf) wants to stay out of the public and stuff, so he probably wasn't in it at all.

Do you think they remembered that it was a fake gun when they did it?

I thought it was a real gun, but with blanks?

For him to admit to something, even the explanation, to be disingenuous would make me inclined to believe the whole trick was untoward.*

    *Obviously the trick is bull****

No, during the conference at the beginning, they were given plastic guns at the conclusion and were asked to bring the plastic guns with them, wherever they were going.

It took me a second to get the "the g is pronounced" gag. Very funny.

It's kind of a subtle distinction, but he's usually quite honest about his dishonesty, if that makes sense. Almost all of his tricks ("Illusions, Michael!") feature some degree of misdirection where he patters on about subliminal suggestion or something, but to do a full special where he explains the background of the wisdom of crowds thing is a step further.

One that he was obviously uncomfortable with, too, which I think is why he felt it was worth noting. His books make it clear that he generally takes the ethical implications of what he does quite seriously, he puts a lot of thought into it.

Yes I agree. His tricks are all about misdirection and psychology and thats what I like about him, however the lottery one was just pure BS. No misdirection, no subtlety or skill. The explanation special was purely for money and thats why he feels **** because he knows the trick was dodgy and the brutal explanation only muddied its appearance. He does seem honest and thats why he said that I reckon.

He posted a pic of himself and others at the twitter HQ without his beard. He actually looks a little like Ray Foley!

Can't link it, cos I'm on my phone :o

I love the shoplifting part of the heist. The reaction of the 2 guys working in the job is just hilarious!
