MW2 ran just fine on Windows XP Pro for me, but now Black Ops runs like mud.

Would upgrading to Vista improve anything for me?

upgrading to vista is probably a step backwards, hated vista wished id never upgraded, on 7 now and its so much better then vista!! Microsoft F***ed up with vista in my opinon

I am not an expert on the software, but it is my understanding that Win7 was an upgrade of Vista which made it more efficient and required less memory to do the same job. 7 may be better than Vista.

There is a function in 7 though that allows you to run XP in a virtual machine iirc. That may be the best route to go. Good luck.

I'd recommend Windows 7 over Vista.

But definitely not XP Mode for running a game like Black Ops. XP Mode is Windows XP in a virtual machine, which is mainly there for compatibility for programs that work in XP but not 7. Performance in virtual machines is seriously impacted. And it defeats the purpose of upgrading to 7 in order to play it in XP Mode. :)

Woops, You are indeed correct, I got mixed up with my operating system names.

Windows 7 was what I was thinking about, going from XP to Win7.

So is it better to stay on Xp pro or take an upgrade to Win7.
I don't mind the work involved, in fact my PC needs a good clean up anyway.

In terms of performance, would Win7 offer any better or smoother performance in Black Ops?

well newer programs are designed to run best on 7 such as graphics software and as far as i know certain programs run only on 7, like directx 10+.
But to be fair upgrading to windows 7 may not be the fix, maybe hardware in your pc may need be upgraded also?

Blops runs fine for me on XP. Could be hardware based.

    Whats you pc spec?

    Dual core 6600 at 3.3Ghz, 2.9G Ram (4G installed) ATI 8800GTX
System drive is a 15kGb Barracuda 4ms seek drive.

The systemrequirementslab link says it's way more than enough, but I guess thats hard to quantify.
I've started to defrag the main drive, it was quite bad (22%).

Call of duty black ops has a terrible PC port. I would not bother with it and get a better PC shooter

Cheers guys, I've improved it a lot.
    Defragged HD
    Loaded latest NVida driver
Turned on my overlocking to 3.4Ghz, it was down at 2.4 Ghz...
Turned off some video effects, shadows etc.

Now running at 80 to 90 FPS, very playable at 1600 x 1200.

Still on XP though, I might try dual booting Win7 on a partitioned drive.

You can just go into your desktop graphics/display properties, then go into adbanced settings and if theres a slider for going between "performance or quality", drag it towards performance. That'll sort ya out!
