 8.5 million for the S3 premiere, it boggles the mind....it's widely regarded as absolute trash, BUT.....it's pulverising everything on cable + numbers most networks would kill for?

Dumb Americans?, hurting real actors and scripted tv?....or harmless entertainment?

I have to admit to watching it the odd time, only cause my girlfriend was watching it.

Im sick to death with all these big brother type shows but have to admit i kinda liked this. I woulddnt turn it on of my own accord but its funny and every man wants to be able to get away with what they get up to.

It doesn't say anything about television - what it does is say a lot about Americans. Anyone ever see Idiocracy? In 5 years time, I can well imagine the number one show being "Ow My Balls"

TV shows like Jersey Shore and the popularity in which they gain, make me genuinely worried for the state of us as a species.

I'm more worried about what this says about humanity :o

Ever notice how that movie only shows america? I like to believe the rest of the world has created an idiot forcefield around the US and lives in an intellectual utopia

Now I really am worried about my sister, seeing as she's just started watching the series...wait, why am I only worried just now? She already watches shows like Britain's Got Talent, X Factor, Teen Mom, The Hills and all that other crap. But then again, we all know that these shows are easy to produce, easy to market and appeal to the lowest common denominator.

But overall, I don't even think the people even know what the "M" in MTV used to stand for, seeing its current focus right now.

There's a serious dumbing down of the general population and it's being lead by all the brainless rubbish on the TV following even more brainless morons who's only goal in life is to be famous and on TV. Where years ago you could have proper discussions about things that actually mean something in life, most conversations you hear these days are about all this crap on TV and when you try to talk about more intellectual topics people generally lose interest and would rather talk about what Moron X did on TV show Y.

Although I agree with this, I don't think it's that recent of a phenomenon.I also enjoy Jersey Shore, I've no clue why. Sometimes they come out with some great insights, 'That'd just be beating a dead horse, and you shouldn't beat a deadhorse..cause that'd be mean'
'My blood pressure is off the roof'

I hate this idea that if you watch Jersey Shore you're some kind of simpleton, brainless idiot. I watch it the odd time and it always entertains me. I just like watching complete douchebags act like douchebags. They're hilarious to watch. Some of the stuff they say is gold.

I also watch and love Mad Men, Breaking Bad and my favourite show is Six Feet Under.

    Go figure.

That's what the "M" now stands for in MTV.

I think where going to have a Situation in less people are going to watch Jersey Shore.

I think its maybe the best thing to come from MTV in a long time. The last good thing on MTV was viva la bam

I absolutely love Jersey Shore. Yes its car crash/ trash tv but I couldn't give a shit, I find it really interesting the way these people live there lives its very entertaining in my eyes. Remember Stephen Fry isnt for everyone.

Pauly D : "Deena's cowboy hat, thats probably another nickname for her kooka" :D

Hmmmm. I think people are missing the point of this show completely. Its basically a comedy show. The fun is watching these people who are complete tool bags acting like complete tool bags and laughing at them for doing so. I dont think anyone admires them or wishes to be like them but it is interesting to watch how this section of U.S society behaves and basically look down your nose at them. Thats the appeal.

So essentially its the opposite of what people are saying here. People are not watching because they feel some empathy for these people but because they feel they are better than them and they are something to be ridiculed. You are not watching because you are stupid like the people in the show. You are watching because you think you are not stupid like the people in the show.

I watched it last week for the 1st time and found it very amusing. I think it all depends if you are laughing at them rather than with them. Im personally more worried about a programme like Shameless has on society. It seems to be bringing a normalisation of skanger and benefits culture.

    M

To quote Father Ted..." Near far away, near far away" 8.9 million people in the US is only 2.88% of the population.
