Just looking for a bit of advise, planning a 3 week trip to the states in July, looking at spending a week in each of the above 3 cities, just wondering what are the most see sights in any of the areas, esp Washington and Boston, New York has loads to see and do that I know of but the must see/do's would be nice to hear! All suggestions welcome!

I would say that a week is too long for washington.
There you'd need 1 day for the memorials, 1 for the museums and 1 for shopping in georgetown.
I'd also suggest staying in georgetown - good buzz there.

week is a way too long in washington, you can easily see all the main tourist sites in that town in 2 days

in dc basically its a straight line between the lincoln memorial and the capitol building and you have most of the sights covered in that town, you could then visit arlington cemetery and maybe the pentagon but thats basically its, everything you want to see is within this map

I would think 3 weeks in just cities might get a bit headwrecking (for me anyway) and it would be very hot in those cities in July. Would you consider doing a few days on a beach or mountain resort for a change of scene? Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and the Maine coast is very doable from Boston. As is mountain areas in Vermont. Or how about upstate New York, there are beautiful areas an hour or so from NYC.

If it were me, I would go for a combination of city and country, but then I am a country mouse at heart! I would keep the week in New York though, we were there for 9 nights last year and had loads to keep us busy. We could easily have stayed longer!

Thanks for that, I was thinking a week in DC might be a bit much! Would loke to head out to Cape Cod for a day or 2 maybe cut DC short? We'll see how far the budget can stretch!!!
