    hey all,
Thinking of getting a 1986 mini metro. I found 6r4 fiberglass kits for it which fit on it no problem so thats the cosmetics done.
Now my question is if i wanted to make this into a proper 6r4 replica what engine do you recommend and is it possible to do the 4wd or is it more easier to make it rwd? I would make it a mid mounted just like the real 1.
    Any help would be great
    many thanks

I agree. Metro's are very rare here. Leave it as is.

I agree with the above for different reasons.
    1. There is a serious amount of work there to do what you are thinking.
    2. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I'm surprised that hasn't sold TBH, it's a genuine car. Needs a set of old style plates to do a right job on it.

Hardly fair, it was a good car when released.

Has good handling and ride comfort also and if it is a GTI or MG model they are nice

Now if its the image of who drove them that puts you off thats different to the car actually being bad.

I was going to go and look at it before however I thought from the pictures it had a nice application of hammerite on the bumpers and rear. I didn't fancy driving from Wicklow to find out at the time

I know I'll be shot and probably banned but I have to say it... it needs a Clarkson Piano to do a job on it..:o

Ever since they came out I had some unknown absolute hate of these cars, as the years passed I thought I was safe but no... here they are again.. The 6R4 was the only hope but that was more to do with speed & noise than Metro.

From what I remember it was ok, I might give him a buzz during the week and take another look. He also had a mint K10 Micra that MaxDamage would shoot his family for.
'Metro' by Graham Robson is a good read if you can find a copy of it. Goes through all the development and design of the car.

If you do call could I be cheeky enough to ask you to find out about the 'hammerite'?

Give me a PM if you do as I'm now searching for a hobby car.

I'll also be trying to get a copy of that book:)

And I thought I was the only one who liked Metro's! :D

Will do, il get some pics too if I do go for a look. I'm sure you could get that book on eBay if you snoop around.
I'm not so much a fan of Metros as more interested in the whole BL thing that was going on at the time.

Quentin Wilson doesn't really like them though:

The rust........THEY ALL DO THAT SIR :D

Then again Wilson ranks with Clarkson on my list of dispised motoring journalist.

Although both are ahead of the Sunday independent guy. Grinds my gear for some reason

Well, one thing can be said about them, they are apparently VERY spacious inside. You could fit a half a house inside of one.

The 6R4 may have been ugly but it was a very ambitious project for a small manufacturer to undertake at that time, hats off to whoever persuaded the beancounters to fund it.

It worked well, punched above its weight and lasted competitively, well beyond its sell by date in Rallycross, Hillclimbs etc.

Its an icon IMHO, if Ali has an ex works example (minus original engine?) I'd advise him to hang onto it, as a tribute to Tony Pond if nothing else.

OMG. I always wanted a 6R4.....oooh, and with the Rothmans look.........OMG.......I'd sell my house for that. Really........ever since I heard Harry Toivonen in the plain white one barreling up the road on the Circuit..........it's the noise, see, the noise........sigh........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I know of a 6R4 Replica in that has a front mounted Ford 2.9 V6, Ford 4x4 running gear and a 6R4 kit. It looks and sounds good from the distance, but when you get close, not seeing the engine in the back looks wrong.

Also, I was told (don't know if this is true) the car came in LWB & SWB models. The difference is in the air scoops on the doors.

I've seen the AliBaba car....very nice,i was afraid to look first and then did not want to blink.

    VERY COOL

if i was making one from a mini metro i'd go with a scooby doo for a donor, you'll have performance and 4wd and it would be interesting to leave it as a sleeper, but then i am out there:eek:

I tried to buy a Maxi 2 years ago in Carlow that had come from Moores. The car was in good nick but sadly I understand its now slowly returning to the ground.

It was in a yard of what appeared to be an old pub on the way out of Carlow town on the old Dublin road?

A silver one as well. Jesus I never knew that was there. The red one was a nice auto and appeared to be in good nice. Sad to see it rot there
