    Hi,

Has anyone any idea of a rough cost to buy an alternator for a 2005, 1.6TDCi, 90bhp ford focus. It's a 120A alt.

Any ideas on supply only cost or supply & fit costs.

Would i be able to fit myself. i'm handy enough with the tools and have a good idea how all these things work

    try www.eurocarparts.co.uk

Doubt you'll be able to fit it yourself. You'll need to tension and time the belt and all...

Mine went last year, 1.6 TDCi and parts and labour in an indy cost about €243 or €343 (I can't remember off hand). It happened on NYE so I had it back on the 4th when the re-opened.

Before condeming the alternator, make sure that the clutch pulley on it hasn't failed, as this can give symptoms akin to no charge.

You might need to remove the intercooler trunking to get at some of the alternator bolts. Use a large wrench to slacken the belt's tensioner pulley (it swivels) and you can pin it in the slack position using a drill bit (6mm I think)

Finally, ring around and get the best price. Some suppliers are cheaper than other.

Ahh its straight forward enough but a bit time consuming. I'll run through most of it.
Slacken off the belt tensioner by using a 16 or 15mm spanner and the belt comes off handy enough. Make sure you put a pin in the tensioner then you can remove it. Thats held on by three 10mm bolts. Disconnect the battery, just take off the negative from it(black).

I think you have to remove the inlet pipe with the sensors, thats held on to the engine with a few 8mm bolts and juvely clip. Thats straight forward. If you remove the light it makes life a little easier.

Now you can disconnect the plug on the alternator and take off the heavy wire going onto it. To do this just pull up the little rubber grommet covering it and theres a 10mm nut. Now on to the main part. There are 4 bolts holding it on all 16mm, loosen the 2 bolts on the right closest to the exhaust 2 turns, you DON'T have to take them out. Next then just remove the other 2 bolts on the alternator on the left side. It should pop out then. Hope this helps!

How do I check the clutch pulley on it. I have aHaynes manual for the van and I'm fairly handy with all this stuff.

    Thanks

Take the belt off with a 15mm or 16mm spanner, slackening the tensioner will do this. Grab the alternator pulley and give it a few quick twists, you should see the rotor rotating inside the alternator body when you turn it to the right and when you do it the other way it should start only moveing until it gets momentum. This is a bad explanation maybe someone else can put it in better words.
