    Hello all,

Just wondering if there is a major difference in protection in the above cas in the hopefully unlikely event of a crash

I have heard the golf is made of stronger stuff

just wondering if the protection/body of the skoda is ok if you were in a crash

I know it depends on the type of crash, angle of impact etc but just wondering in general if would be safe enough getting the skoda

    many thanks in advance

The skoda is pretty much the same except for curtain airbags

That's great, thanks very much bazz 26 and colm_mcm for your replies

yea it looks like the side head airbags (or the curtain airbags as colm said - presume they are the same thing) are the only difference. it says on the skoda link that the side head airbags can be put in as an optional extra

is this only if you were buying a new car or could you ask for them to be put into a 2008 skoda?

i am deciding between both cars, will be able to get a fairly good price on both, not sure of the exact price yet, but the 08 skoda will have the cheaper tax of €156 compared to €585 approx tax for the 06 golf.

im just afraid if i get the golf that it might be hard to sell on in a few years time - simply because the 08 versions will have the cheaper tax and the 08 versions will be more affordable for people in a few years time so will go for them compared to the 06 version because of the cheaper tax. so 06 car might be hard to sell.

but then the golf has those side head or curtain airbags so would that be better then?

    many thanks

Get the skoda, its actually a better all rounder than the golf. Boot is bigger etc..
Paying a premium for a slightly less dull hatchback from the same stable based mostly on clever marketing and the resultant higher perceived quality is crazy.

    Hi Colm

thats great, thanks for your reply. you are probably right, the only thing that is bugging me now is that the skoda doesnt have the side head airbags, i googled them and it says that they are curtains that come down to protect head against the window in the event of a crash or if the car rolls over.

so the golf would be safer as it has these side head airbags that the octavia doesnt. but the octavia has the normal side airbags just not the side head ones.

do you think that it would matter much safety wise that the octavia doesnt have the side head airbags? thats the only thing thats doubting me getting the octavia

    many thanks

I think you might be worrying a little too much. You have plenty of airbags in both vehicles.

I'd think you would be better off investing in an advanced driver training that extra airbags.

More useful, you'll use it every time you drive the car and it will hopefully help you avoid an accident
