My laptop wouldn't turn on the other night. Power supply connected and battery inserted but got a black screen and not a single light coming on (at the front of the machine) when the power button was pressed.

Long story short i have attached a picture of my mother board to get some opinions as to whether what i perceive to be some sort of burn out is actually that or if it is normal and there is something else at fault. If it is actually burnt out does that mean it's bin time for the laptop?

If you want more info here you go:

I opened it up (it's out of warranty by about 2 months) and found no loose connections --i hoped it would be something simple like re-seating the connection between the power button and the motherboard.

What i did find was that upon connecting the power supply and pressing the power button i could hear the machine whirring slightly as if it was going to power up the hard drive then clicked loudly spun for a few seconds and then went quiet while the screen stayed blank. Nothing happened beyond that.I also noticed that the mother board around the soldered points where the hard drive is connected look like it might have burned out or over heated or something (this is something i dont have any experience of as a mother board has never died on me out of warranty). I have attached a picture for you to take a look at and hopefully advise me whether or not it is time to bin the computer???

At that point i put the machine back toghether thinking ok... maybe it's the hard drive. Once it was back in one piece i reconnected the power supply and press the power button. Nothing. No sign of life or the hard drive clicking or spinning or any lights. So i dismantled the machine again connected the power supply and found that once again when the machine was partially dismantled i was actually getting some sign of life (lights on, hard drive spinning and clicking -though not sounding healthy at all). Very weird. I still cannot explain that.

    Best, Danny.

With something like this, if it was in warranty, I'd guess it would have the motherboard replaced. So I'd say that's what probably needs to be done. I can't tell you much more having not got my hands on it.
