Your herd number will work for sheep but you'll have to contact your local DVO to get them to activate your herd for Ovine (you're not automatically set up for it) but it can be done over the phone.

The same number won't work for pigs, you need a separate one for that and you'll have to have an inspection completed by a Veterinary Inspector (VI) from your local DVO. The application forms for pig numbers are on this page on the Dept. of Ag. website. Or you can ring the Pig ID section of the Dept in Dublin on 1890 504 604.

Pigs like living in muck and sheep like to be clean, so you could have a problem with sharing the shed. The pig will muck up every bit of bedding that the lamb will have - although the lamb would live outside 365 days of the year if you had enough grass. Also, you will need to get the pig ringed if you are going to let him loose in a field - otherwise he will dig and dig for grubs and worms until he has the whole field dug and you will have no grass for the lamb at all. Although its years since we had a pig, the last one we had escaped and dug a 2 acre field in a day while we were away from home. I don't know if there are modern alternatives to ringing pigs - someone might be better informed than me.

Dad applied there a few months ago for a pig number (hasnt came yet) as we are plannin on gettin a pig for the freezer too :) ..Apparently pigs like company so your supposed to have 2 (they get lonely if there on there own) but maybe the lamb will keep the pig company:rolleyes::rolleyes:...As for them in the same shed pigs (well the ones reared outdoors do) keep there living quarters very clean..
