I don't think the price you paid is a ripoff if it was bought in a small shop.

The shopkeeper has to order and stock the bags. It also probably isn't feasible for him to stock 40kg bags either.

The rate you quoted works out at €20 per 40kg bag - only a fiver more then you paid at the hardware store.

€10.90 for 40Kg bags of English coal on the dock road in Limerick
and I think its €13 if they deliver it.

On the flip side, the local garage charges 10.80 for the 20Kg bags :)

a 20kg of black diamond is about €10 in most places, a 40kg is usually €16kg.

usually with most items, when you buy a bigger pack its works out cheaper per kg.

not a rip off, just plain normal selling practices employed worldwide.

€13.50 delivered for 40kg in Newcastle West

good value considering it's €10 for 20kg bag in the local garage and have to lug it out of the car myself :)

40 kg bag black diamond costs here Ballina 12.50
If u bought 10 bags u get the 11th for free so i get 11bags for 10 euro each

Maybe this one needs to be moved from Rip Off to Bargain Alerts :)

On a related topic, has anyone else noticed the number of coal merchants that have been popping up lately, I know of at least 4 new ones in the Limerick area in the past 6 months, all cheap.

Where is that in ballina, do they deliver? The garage on the kilalla rd (corcorans?) selling economy polsih coal 12 euro a bag. Those small bags you get in shops/garages are usually 25kg.

Every time u buy a bag 40 kgs u get a stamp on the card
ten stamps is one bag for free
Thinks its no delivery for this

A couple of guys round our way sell bags of turf and wood for 3 quid a bag. Coal here is 10.50 for 20Kg. I've stopped getting the coal as I can get 3 bags turf & 1 bag wood for 12 quid! Bags are slightly heavier than the 20Kg bag of coal.

i was asked for five euro to have my goods delivered from my local hardware, i suppose it is not too bad, as i could not fit items in car, and was glad to have them delivered, but it was first time i had ever been asked for delivery money

Just wondering,,,,what does english coal burn like say compared to polish...

also i heard of columbian coal. And black emerald. Im led to believe polish is the best. The others are a more dirty coal , unclean and not as easily to light as the output aint great. also leave plenty of ashes in da morning

Ah , i pay €15 for my 40kg black diamond bags, likewise put into a bunker, cant get better than that like. Coal prices looks to be going up. A mate of mine from Dublin buys a load of coal at a time in meath and sells some in Dublin and makes a profit :D Because the price in Dublin due to law on smokeless coal is more expensive.

why is this thread in Rip-Off ireland - there isn't even a smidgen of rip-off in any post whatsoever.

Bargain alerts or bargain requests would be more suited.

BTW, you have at least 3 grades of coal + you have smokeless / non smokeless.

The cheaper grade burns quicker and lower density - fine for short term fires and small rooms.

Decent coal such as black diamond or other premium polish coal is great for all evening fires and larger rooms as it gives out great heat.

As a prolific coal buyer, premium 20kg bags are region €9 - €10 in most places, 40kg premium polish coal can be had for as low as €15 if you shop around. Basic household coal can be had for about €11 - €12 per 40kg.

Smokeless Coal is about 10% more expensive.

You should be aware that peat briquettes have about half the 'heat' content as the same weight of coal and sod turf has even less (assuming it is well dried).

Similar goes for timber. It needs to be well seasoned (less than 20% moisture) otherwise before it gives heat out it has to use its heat to drive off the moisture.

Having said that you cannot beat the smell of a turf fire.

12 Euro for a 40kg bag of e-glow in Ballyshannon,Donegal, great stuff lasts for ages and leaves a fine ash. Great heat off it and very clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,105 ✭✭✭ectoraige

Texaco in Sligo has 3x20kg Black Diamond smokeless for €20. Board name Mona briquettes are 3 for €10 in a few places too. Logs are hard to compare price as there's no standard bag size, you would have thought the EU would have legislation covering that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,300 ✭✭✭✭casio4

There is a place in Naas that do 5 bags of logs for €15
and 5 bags of turf for €15
I have got them a few times before it is a great bargain

Quinn's Hardware next to the Texaco on the Gort side of Ardrahan sells 40kg bags for 12 euro, although I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for the quality.
