Can't seem to find the other thread, but spotted this on the GUI site. It was this day last year that the 2010 draws were published, so i hoped they might appear this week. Seems we'll have to wait a little longer.

"The Cups & Shields and other Inter Club draws will be published on this [Gui.ie] website over the coming weeks."

Cheers mate, but it's the Leinster ones i'm after. I wonder why it takes the Leinster branch so much longer than the others?

The draws in Leinster were made before Christmas.
They are just slow putting them on the website.
The leinster website is not very active at the best of times.

Anyone any idea how the decide which clubs play preliminary rounds? Looking through the draws for the respective comps and it there seem to be a few clubs who had to play prelim matches last year and again this year.

    Anyone shed any light?

I always assumed it was random, or at least rotated each year. It's not like it's all minnows either. I was about to say 'big guns like Milltown and Stackstown' are playing prelim games, but sure neither of them got past R1 last year :p

We get a prelim game about every other year, which is grand. It can actually be a benefit if you ask me.

Howdy golfers. I'm newish to club golf and was half harbouring some hopes of getting picked for one of the teams this year to represent the club.

My question is in relation to eligibility. For Pierce Purcell it states that the eligibility is "a combined handicap of 27 and the minimum handicap being 12.

I heard that this is in relation to your lowest handicap of last year. So if I was at 15 last year, but got to 11 or lower this year before the qualifiers, (yes dream on says you) would that make me ineligible?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

This year is irrelevant. It all goes on last year's handicap. You can go as low as you want this year, it doesn't affect your status for inter-club in 2011.

My understanding is that you would be able to enter the team, as long as you were no lower than 12HC the year before.
e.g. lads on our Barton Cup team had a combined HC of 14 at the end of the 2009. During the 2010 one lad dropped down 4 or 5 shots but his original HC at the start of the year counted.

    Thanks. That's interesting.

In peoples experiences, do you get a lot of people 'on the way down' making up these teams or would that be the exception?

Like in theory you could have a 'current' 12 & 15 handicap partnership taking on an 8 & 10 combination, who were off 12 & 15 last year?

    Sometimes.
That's the simplest answer. It also will depend on the competition and the stage.
Like in the early rounds of the Barton, played in April or whatever, many guys won't have played many (any) qualifying competitions in the current year so their handicap will be largely the same as last year's lowest. Later in the year there is obviously a greater chance that the current handicap will be lower.
If the competition allows juniors, there's probably a better chance of their handicap dropping more quickly too.

I think I remember that in the Barton semi, Greystones had a pairing where the current combined was 7 (an 8 and a +1). The 8 was a young guy off 18 at the start of the year and the +1 had been off scratch so that is a dramatic reduction.
My (limited) experience is that they don't vary all that much from what you'd expect but I guess you'd have to be prepared for facing a 'hot' pairing too...
