And there's also a bit of a water leak (but I'm not sure whether it's coming from the radiator or the water pump).

    What would cause this?

But to answer your query, At worst - Head Gasket Blown.

At best - Gasket Seal is gone and needs replacing. Check the latter first .

Sounds like a sign of a head gasket on its way out.....

Have a look under the oil filler cap and see if there is any white emulsified sludge under there.

Don't really want to say as it's going into a garage for diagnosis fairly soon. It's not my own car; it's only a small 1 litre petrol and it wouldn't be worth spending more than €500 on it.

The funny thing is that the car had a full service and had the coolant replaced less than twelve months ago. Would this garage have any responsibility if it turns out the problem was caused by a lack of coolant or that the coolant was never changed last year?

could just be the water pump - had a similar problem with my ford fiesta van.

water pump was gone - somehow oil was leaking into the coolant..... system was flushed and still had an oil leak - so used one of those "fix an oil leak" tins in Halfords....job done.

Mechanic initially thought it was a head gasket.

is your car heater not working ?

Checked the oil filler cap. No sign of white sludge there..... maybe it's just a new water pump?

How did your Carina get on with the NCT ?

OP, aside from the sludge and heater not working are there any other symptoms ? Does the car overheat or stay at normal temp ?

It overheated once according to the owner. I took a look at it, I noticed the sludge in the coolant tank, and the car hasn't been driven since. It's due to go to a garage for a diagnosis in the next few days.

    All points to ominous.

Aren't you the owner ? What make and model car is it ? If it's overheated, has sludge in the coolant and the heater doesn't work it certainly may be HG. Have they topped up the coolant too ?

As I said in post#6 above, it's not my car. It belongs to a relative, who asked me to look at it.

Bit weird the way you won't reveal what sort of car it is to be honest.
