engadget.com Live from sony's ces 2011 press event

kotaku.com live at sonys ces 2011 keynote

Some excerpts from Sony Ces can see the keynotes from a few sources above.
5:05PM By March, more than 50m televisions in the US will be internet enabled by Sony products -- PS3, Internet TV, and Blu-ray players.

5:06PM "This is a significant base of connected products. As Godzilla once said, size does matter." 60m PSN accounts now

5:06PM Network services are an important source of revenue -- Sony is now more than just hardware.

5:07PM "3D is far more than a science fiction gimmick... 3D is designed to mimic the world itself."

The problem with 3D TV is the glasses.....so it seems Sony have gotten rid of the TV and left us with just the glasses.
5:11PM There's some crazy set of glasses on stage, as well as what looks like it's a 3D portable Blu-ray player.

    sony-ces-2011-0085.jpg

5:12PM Hiroshi is going over basically what Sir Howard just said -- but we're totally distracted by that headset. It's white, and looks like a head-mounted display of some kind.

5:13PM Okay -- it's part of Sony's line of "personal displays." First, the new 3D VAIO.

5:14PM The headset and portable player are just prototypes. It is indeed a 3D head-mounted display. Two panels -- one in front of each eye, so there's no crosstalk. Built-in surround audio.

5:14PM Yoshioka is talking about playing Gran Turismo 5 while wearing the personal 3D display.

5:14PM "Not even my wife can disturb me [while playing]," he says.

Wouldn't need to replace my TV and could get 3D (for just me) and i get to ignore everyone, Sony introducing new Virtual Boy.
The 3D head-mounted display features a 720p OLED display for each eye, simulated 5.1 surround audio.

5:14PM The headset also has a blue LED lightbar across the front, which is super slick.

Only glasses 3D gets me looking like KITT or a cylon, i think that's a plus.

5:16PM Hiroshi says they're working on glasses-free TVs for the living room, with three prototypes in the booth. Using a 4K panel for the larger display and 2K display on the smaller side, which is interesting -- seems to be how other are solving the problem as well. One is running Gran Turismo 5 on one, a 46" and 56" LCD 4k panels and one 26" 2k OLED panel

Now no glasses, seem the two had a disagreement and went there separate ways.

5:18PM Time to talk about the Google TV products. "The next great shift is upon us -- the marriage of the TV and the internet."

    sony-ces-2011-0101.jpg

RTE player still sucks comparatively, Google TV for the PS3 please.

5:25PM Sony bringing monolithic design to more of its TVs -- and select models are getting Gorilla Glass, which is exclusive to Sony TVs. That ought to make vigorous Move sessions a little less dangerous.

    sony-ces-2011-0130.jpg

It's meant to be on my phone but i'm not brave enough to try this, also still not going to buy the Move.

5:33PM BDP-S780 Blu-ray player -- 3D capable, DLNA, WiFi. And -- Skype for free video calls!

3 years since they announced it on psp and there may be a chance it's getting on PS3 now.

Now some cameras that have only a small connection to PS.

5:35PM "I've shown you TV, Blu-ray players, and a VAIO laptop. But what do consumers want next?" Showing off the "world's first consumer 3D camcorder that provides 'double full HD.'" Two 1080p sensors, two procesosrs, 10x zoom, glasses-free 3D display.

    sony-ces-2011-0176.jpg

5:39PM Unveiling new Cybershots that take 3D stills, and allow you take photos during video capture. 1920 x 1080 60p video recording.

    sony-ces-2011-0193.jpg

5:40PM New WX9 offers "all the features I just mentioned" but will come in at under $220 dollars.

5:40PM Looking at some 3D WX9 photos now. They're nice, but we can't say 3D is adding much here.

5:40PM The 3D images were displayed via PS3, which is nifty.

Sony Ericcson hitting the stage, they make the playstation phones.

    sony-ces-2011-0199.jpg

Entertainment and phones but no PS phone, but Kaz Hirai(President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment) used the words "tablets," "smartphones" and "PlayStation" in the same sentence next.
    sony-ces-2011-0215.jpg

5:45PM Kaz: "We're focused on a networked Sony experience."

5:46PM "Sony is in a unique position to bring 3D gaming to all your TVs... for PS3s, Sony internet TVs, cameras and more."

    sony-ces-2011-0220.jpg

5:46PM Talking up Gran Turismo 5 now -- 5.5m copies sold since launch.

5:47PM "We're going to continue to support 3D with our biggest franchises," he says, talking about Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3.

    sony-ces-2011-0222.jpg

Same trailer as VGAs, but with gorgeous 3D sand.

5:50PM Kaz: "We'll have services that connect to multiple devices -- including the growing mobile market."

5:51PM "Now is an incredibly exciting time, and we're investing heavily in this area. You can expect to see strategic devices in the near future... including tablets currently in development and smartphones."

5:51PM Launching a "line" of Sony tablets.

5:53PM He's talking about Music Unlimited hitting other Sony products, but we're still stuck on the PlayStation Phone and tablet mentions -- he definitely said "PlayStation," "phone," and "tablet" all in one sentence.

There's an other show later in the year for mobiles so some more will probably be show there about a PS phone, but if it's on par with all the new phones it may be using Honeycomb with the dual core requirement or sticking with single core and remaining on a max of Gingerbread (Android 2.3).

5:54PM Hide Nishino on stage to talk about Music Unlimited and Qriocity.

5:55PM "With MU you can sync your library to the cloud and access it on multiple devices," Hide says. They're going to focus on the service as experience on the PS3 with the demonstrated app running on the PlayStation 3, with DualShock controls on the bottom of the screen.

5:56PM "Music Unlimited will learn your musical preferences", Hide says. The controls on the bottom are Like, Dislike, More Like This, Options, etc. This service will be accessible through music.qriocity.com when the service becomes available.

No playstation phone or psp 2 and everything had 3D in it bar the Things that don't have any video at all. CES is not a gaming event and the only games shown were ones that had trailers before. MU is looking good for the PS3
5:56PM Cirque du Soleil is about to perform some of the Viva Elvis show from Aria.

So am I crazy, or did I just see 100 French acrobats prancing around an arena the other night?
