Hi Shootingkid, I have four of them, but I only hunt with two of them now. I think they're great dogs I have a few HPR books and trained them from that. My only advice is they are smart and well capable of working it out for themselves, which is a good thing when they're trained! So make sure they learn to sit and come back to you without fail, the rest is easy. They will hunt to they die and each is a little character, I think I will always have Brittanys.

    Some of my lot,

Lovely Dogs, By all accounts its a faux pas to refer to them as Brittany Spaniels in the 2011 they are just Brittanys, I learned that to my cost ear is still ringing after it:D

    Hi first time on Boards
Using Brittanys for 10 years, one of the best dogs ever in my opinion. Check out my videos on youtube Brittany Gun Dogs (Brittanyclub). I have a lot of the lads converted to Brittanys in Rathcormac Gun Club.

have a 6 month old brittany.. just as mallards says really clever and so far exceptionally easy to train..i got a book on ebay on training brittanys was written in 1976 and have to say its bloody good reading nothin to advanced and they dont put too much emphasis on obedience as they maintain the brittanys are probably the most placid of the hunting breeds again as mallards says the recall is the important thing

A chap I ran into last year during a bit of sport in Mayo had a bitch out with him for snipe and woodcock - I was well impressed with the calm and measured way this specimen went about her business. Definatly a breed I would consider in the future:)

Are they any good for the odd bit of duck shooting and would I be right in saying there like a springer/setter cross in huntig terms:D

just got my first brittany this year....... he pointed on a river bank and i drop a cock into the river. he jumped in and retrieved it. he will also retrieve duck and teal. best dog for hunting great nose. good family pets too. i train him myself. didn't point till 13 mouths old. now he is as steady as rock. good in cover too but you will need a bell....

Im going to get a brittany as i want me own gun dog ta bring up and train, does matter what parents etc???? or like a pure bred brittany good enough?? and just wondering how much money would you spending on one....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭BoarHunter

Having shot over many brittany spaniels i can tell you that you won't go wrong ! excellent gun dog with a born passion for hunting. These dogs are really early hunters and start working as soon as they can run. They are clever, hard working and devoted to their master.

You can watch videos of the creme of Brittany trainers on youtube the Keranlouan Kennels

this pup is only 3 months old

great for woodcock and definitely IMO the best alrounder

I got my bitch from there and she is a fierce hard worker. Don't be put off by any show awards in their pedigree as Brittanys are the last of the gundogs that are still dual dogs.
I was out today with her and got a nice hen. We shoot hens on the shoot in season as we release them each spring to breed.

If you know anyone heading to Spain shortly, send them into El Corte Ingles. It's like a department store like Arnotts. I was in Barcelona once and got it for 40 odd euro I think. The missus was there again this year and got me another one, she said it was 50 euro I think now. Even though they're leather they don't rot and mine get a soaking regularily. These are the guys that make it although I don't see that particular one on their site.

Ok i got the auld pair convined so im definetly getting a brittany,i emailed that lad in cliathan but il give him a ring early this week,i kind of need to buy a young pup so the other dogs here wont fight with him,all that pedigree champion stuff on that site, would you pay any notice to that no??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 977 ✭✭✭mallards

That girl of mine above is from Cliathan kennels PT and she is the best worker I have. Like I said, don't pay too much attention to any show awards in a brittanys pedigree as they are true dual dogs but make sure they come from a working kennel as that is what they have been bred to do and you will get a chance to see parents working possibly.
That's a lovely pup Alchemist, how are you getting on with her training?

if the pups are a few months old and well socilised i would consider that a bonus unless you like little pups! as i said make sure the pup you choose is friendly with people when other dogs are not around. hope you get a good one

getting a pup or an adult dog you will still have to introduce it to the current dogs in much the same way, regardless of age all dogs will have a place in the pack, a quick nip or a growl usually settles things but on occasion dogs will fight to assert themselves. you just have to keep an eye on them.
obviously by getting a pup you will have a dog that will grow with in the current pack thus reducing the risk of fighting as oppsed to introducing an adult dog who is capable of making their presence felt.

my advise is to introduce the new dog whilst making some fuss of the current dogs, dont give your current dogs reason to be jealous of the new dog and then things should sort themselves out naturally. best of luck with the new dog. . .

The were cracking looking dogs but lacked a bit up stairs the did not work out i would not mind going out for a shot with some one that has them sometime tosee what the can do

did you have a look to see if theres any books on amazon about training, I got some books on there for training springers, bought three but two were more for field trails and very technical, Joe irivne i think was the authors name, good book nice and simple and step by step guides.

any pics of your new best friend and keep us posted on how your getting on. best of luck wit it,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 977 ✭✭✭mallards

You should be starting on getting it used to it's name, bonding with it, Maybe getting it to sit for its feed, coming to you when you call it. Your time enough before starting any serious training. Socializing it is important too as they can be quite territorial.

Theres loads of books amazon, even for specifically brittanys, but there mighten be any need for all them,i may see can i just get a book handy without trying to order it or anything!
ya i tried geting the pup to sit and all for food but she just keeps biting and playing and all so shes stil well too young for anything too much!

the younger the better for the little things like mallards said but don't make it like training, make everything into a game. you'll bond better and she will learn more without getting bored. you'll be surprised how quick they will catch on

Training and hunting the brittany spaniel...Ralph B Hammond and Robert D Hammond.. book was first printed in 1971 didnt sell truck loads but can be bought on ebay for bout 10-15 quid... its prob the best no nonsense hpr training book you'll ever read.. guess they knew what they were doin back then eh mallards:p.. its focuses primarily on the basics even a few tips on how to cure bad habits.. although there is a new series of hpr training dvds out recently 4 in all 99 sterling i do believe an alternative if you aint into reading..
