Ireland Is Afraid Of The Sex Culture

Why has Ireland no sex culture?

Is it centuries of incorporating religious values into our society or is it a matter of equality? Either way, we are one of the worlds most under-sexed nations according to a survey from Askmen.com. But it's not just that, we can see it everywhere here.

I just got back from Brazil, a country dripping with sex - casual sex is considered healthy. As soon as you arrive here, you can literally feel the "fridgidness" among society. I feel this problem can be rectified with two issues; a comprehensive sex education in school and legislation legalising the adult industry, namely, sex work.

How many of you were taught a great deal about sex in school? Very few, I'd imagine. Irish children need this to promote a healthy sexual environment.

Just coz you can't get your hole, doesn't mean the whole nation is under-sexed.

Starbelgrade, your assumptions know no bounds.

In reality, I'm getting married soon and I'm happy with my sex life. I'm just comparing several societies and why we come off worse in it.

Ireland is the most uptight, sexually repressed country I've ever been to. I know what you're saying about the foreign countries OP.

Yeah. I think the 'frigidness' he's referring to might just have been the recent cold-snap.

I'm in transition year atm, we got a really good 6 week sex education course a few weeks ago.
I thought I knew all there was to know about sex but the course opened my eyes about a lot of things, while at the same time we weren't told that sex is a bad thing or anything, in fact we were told the exact opposite.

Maybe times are changing, or maybe my school is in the minority. I go to a community school, so we're not strictly Catholic ... maybe that's why we have a good sex ed. course, no? ;)

Your school is in the minority, my friend. But I was talking about a comprehensive course - one that starts at 1st class and finishes in 6th year.

As it happens, the majority in Ireland being Catholic were born from the belief in sexual behaviour as a means for pro-creation exclusively. The backwards religion would still have us believe in this.

Its hard to be sexy in this weather, when your *blush* lover *giggle* whispers down the phone in a voice husky with desire : 'what are you wearing? '

    He doesn't want to hear
'a fleecy couch cosy, a bed and a furry deerstalker'.

It just doesn't have the same ring as; 'a gold bikini and a smile!';)

The only sexual education we received in secondary school was the reproductive system of plants. Pfft.

I have to say that sex culture sounds like having sex while wearing berets and reading books at the same time.

Why has Ireland no sex culture?
WE do have a breeding culture though, we're famous for large families not sleeping with strangers.

I got and am still getting good sex ed in school. They're nearly shoving the thing in our face, talked about it last year in SPHE for months, crops up in religion class now and again and then a couple of weeks ago they had some special group in to talk to us about it, AGAIN!
I think it's mostly to educate people about STDs though.

Still feel as if there's some kinda taboo about it here though, strange.

Am I the only one that thinks we're not sexually repressed anymore? I'm confused, I don't think we're repressed at all. Like it's ok to be swingers, gay, bi, trans, polyamorous etc, what sexuality is being repressed do you think? Like in France/Brazil/Germany it seems that extra marital affairs are normal and accepted, but I don't think that's sexual freedom. I think that's a lack of faithfulness and monogomy, which is completely different from sexual freedom. So can you explain your view further please?

I think we are pretty sexually repressed. Although women my age that are single (I'm 30) tend to be experienced with no hang ups. But all the girls at work from the country that have been with the same dude for years and years look like they're in need of a proper lay. I'll leave it to someone else though, not a looker in the bunch ffs!

I think that the Irish are having as much sex as other nationalities.
We just don't brag/talk about it constantly.

    Is that legal?

It would be a new take on sexual education - something similar to this, I guess:

Was there not a poll recently...
that said we have more sex than anyone?
Are we not the randy Irish?

I have had two latin blooded lovers and they admitted that they loved the way the Irish are so open in bed.

I am definitely not sexually repressed, I have no hang ups. Free sex for all.
if you have an itch needs scratching....get it it scratched.

On the OH, I would not condone prostitution. Also think one night stand should be always safe sex.

+1 to this, sums up my opinion on Irish sex, prostitution and ONS, fair play you psychic!

I went to a community school, and the sex ed was ok in fairness. Between Junior Cert and Leaving Cert we had 3/4 different religion teachers and they all spent a big portion of teaching time discussing contraceptives/sti's etc. But no discussion on the emotional side of sex and the importance of a healthy sex life lol! I also recall been shown videos of pro life/anti abortion rallies by one particular teacher, hmmm

We were also visited by the pro-life ninja's. I'm pretty sure everyone just went to get off class!

Sex education for me was what I learned from the lovely girls of my hometown behind the handball alley. Practical beats theory anyday.

I think they should teach not just about stds and contraception but also about the fun side of sex, like how enjoyable it is and masturbation.
Noone ever explained what an orgasm was to me or how to masturbate, took me ages to figure out.

+1 on the learning about the emotional side of sex
