whats expected in a law essay?

    hi im in my first year in college and have an assignment due for which i either sit in on a court case or do an essay on the effect of equity on law of contract. While i was originally going to do the court visit it may be easier doing the essay on equity as i might not be able to get the time off work to get to the court during a trial.However im not sure as to what an essay on law entails? In this case do i just common on the procedure of of equity law on contract cases and qoute past cotract law cases?
    Im just unsure as to the structure of it of how or what points should be noted?
