The Northern Lights in Norway

Thinking of heading to Northern Norway for a weekend to see the Northern Lights at the end of February. It sounds a bit mad, I know, but i can't get much time off work and it's really cheap to get there.

€12 flights with Ryanair to Oslo return and another €120 return from Oslo to Tromso!! Plan is, to fly out, catch the Northern lights and a bit of Norwegian culture and fly home. Better than sitting around playing the Xbox all weekend!! :D

Anyone been to Norway or seen the Northern Lights? Trying to find out the best spot to see them. All I seem to find on the Internet is a very general "Northern Norway", but no specifics. Would it be best to book a tour to see them (I'd imagine they could bring us out to the middle of nowhere to get a good vantage point)

    This gives some info!

I'm actually planning on going to Tromso myself for next Christmas! Was going to to in Feb this year too but can't afford it sadly!

Tromso is a nice enough spot, I would love to go back there in winter time. Just hope you get weather conditions conducive to the Northern Lights appearing.

Assuming you're flying to Tromso with norwegian.com and you'll have to do an airport transfer? Leave plenty of time to get between Rygge and Gardermoen airports - Rygge is most of an hour away from central Oslo by shuttle bus and train.

Accomodation is expensive everywhere - check out the ABC hotel in Tromso, AMI hotel too for budget options (we paid ~70e/night for basic double rooms) Both are in central Tromso city .
And the price of eating out is horrific - in the end we actually brought all our own dried food for 10 days with us from Ireland and just picked up fresh bread and fruit as required. (ABC and AMI are hostelly affairs with kitchens)

The Polar Museum on the waterfront is worth a look, as is the Arctic Cathedral if you like architecture. Take the cable car to the top of the mountain on the east side of the city, the views are spectacular (if you get enough light to see anything in February)
