New Galway boss Tomas O Flatharta has named three captains to lead his side in 2011.

Defenders Kieran Fitzgerald and Finian Hanley, along with ace attacker Michael Meehan, who skippered the team last season, have all been named as joint captains ahead of O Flatharta's first game in charge of the Tribesmen this Sunday against Sligo in the FBD Connacht League.

"I have named three captains for the year and our thinking is very team-orientated: we are not about individuals," stated O Flatharta.

"I expect that we'll have many leaders and captains by the end of the year. The way we think about it is that we don't base it on individuals, it is a team game."
Galway will be keen to get off to a winning start to their season this weekend after losing out to the Yeats men at the semi-final stage of last year's Connacht SFC.

One word comes to mind - Indecisive, or is he? :D

"our thinking is very team-orientated: we are not about individuals" why not have 15 captains so a mhac?

I wouldn't be one to gleefully piss on an idea before having any data by which to assess it to be honest.

The captain role is something that's pretty meaningless in a lot of counties, I don't see any issue with trying something new to see if you can squeeze some benefit out of it.

As always in the GAA however, haters gonna hate yo.

And what happens if they win a trophy? Do the 3 lads race to the steps to see who gets there first to collect the cup?

Never knew the Nestor cup was that heavy. Then again based on last years performances I'd probably have a better chance of getting my hands on it than the 3 boys.

I'm sure they can lift it together, or nominate one of the three of them to do it.

Why does who gets to lift a cup - of all things - matter?

I wish Tomás O Flatharta and his team the very best of luck this year and will give them my 100% support. I was just sharing the story and having a bit of fun with it, maybe a bit unjust.

IMO it should be one captain. Michael Meehan is not playing the FBD and the NFL (coming back from an injury) but "god be pleasing" he'll be back for the championship so I can understand having a vice captain.

Finian Hanley and Kieran Fitzgerald are our captains? Could you pick 2 worse backs in the country at the moment?

    Leave it to Meehan.

i thought the captain came from the county champions that would mean one of the joyces unless PJ is packing it in

No we don't do that anymore (I mean when was the last time Caltra were in County Final contention since the AI win?)

Salthill too, we even dropped to senior B league for a while. We haven't even won many championship games since then either..:(
Great to see Barna making the progress they did this year, even if they are a bunch of cocky b*****ds.:pac:

One captain is enough for 30 players?

1:10 seems like a reasonable enough ratio to me.

Personally I like the rugby way of doing it, backs leader, forwards leader and a captain. In my expierence you can always tell who the captains are in a team, just because he doesn't go up for a trophy or toss the coin doesn't make people leaders, look at the Clare team of the 90s, Lohan, Seanie, Lynch, Jamesie, Clancy would all have been leaders even though Daly was the captain

Oi leave us Barnamen alone :pac:

This is the lowest Galway football has been in years. I think we can agree that naming 3 captains will do **** all about the downfall.
