Christmas and New Year over...les than 10 weeks to THE racing festival of the year.
Already hearing news of pre-Chletenham meetings.
Will be very intersesting to see if the meetings will remain as popular this year...considering the state of the economy.

On the other hand charities need funds and help more than ever so let's hope they are as well supported as they have been in recent years.

Waterford preview at the planning stages....more details ASAP:o

Wouldn't bother with any of these especially after Davy Russell's 'antics' with Tiger Cry in 2008

The Waterford preview eveing has attracted over 700 for the past four years, raising really good money for charities across the county.

The previews are usually a good craic giving people interested in Cheltenham a chance to meet and exchange views just a couple of weeks away from the festival.

Anyway expecting to get loads of winners if off their head although Ted Walsh did pass on a tip from Ruby last year which he gave from the stage to EVERYONE listening (Sanctuaire- advised at 8/1)

A couple of tips like that would keep me v happy:pac::o

How does Noel O'Brien get these gigs.

A trainer thats actually going to have a few decent prospects would be nice for once as well.

I like the line-up, any plans for Dublin?

Anti-Waterford feeling perhaps? That's a pretty decent line up if you ask me. Is David Pipe not good enough for you ?

You really do talk a lot of tripe, why would i be anti Waterford?

    No hes not good enough.

Its pretty much the exact same people every year, it gets boring, some new faces would be nice.

Pipe wont have any fancied horses in the championship races and last year he didnt mention any of his own horses yet he ended up with two at the festival with good chances in The Package and Notus De La Tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭minty16

What else do I talk tripe about ? :D

That is perfectly acceptable for me. I've never attended the event but always heard good stories and there is a general feeling on this mb that it's a good gig as well. (for charity remember). Pipe is a top grade trainer so I disagreed with your comments. If he's a c---u---n--* and doesn't give out any information about his own horses ect then perhaps you are right with this feeling.

How many of these are there around Ireland before the festival and which are the biggest/main ones?
Would Waterford be one of the top three to attend?
How many people go on the night?
Is it hard to get tickets?
Does Noel Meade and Mullins do them?

    Thanks

There will be loads of these scattered around the country. The one in waterford actually looks like a great line up but sit on your hands for the moment. There will be alot more to come. Maybe one better and maybe one closer to you? You'll hear alot more about them come february so you can make up your own mind which is the best when more are announced.

The cost of tickets and the difficulty of getting them really depend on the venue and the line up. They are generally around the E20 mark and arent too difficult to get. Not all would venues sell out. More often you can pay at the door.

Willie Mullins doesnt attend them. He says he gets too many offers and its too difficult to decide which he'll attend and which he wont so he just says no to all. Cant remember Meade ever attending them. Nina and Paul Carbery do tho so you''ll get the same info from them + more.
Meade's horses are generally in rotten form come cheltenham anyway. Will be interesting this year as he seems to be a bit softer on them albeit he hasnt the same quality as previos years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Tony Mullins makes up for Willie's no-shows at the preview nights!

Patrick has done a few of them the past few years and he's usually fairly candid on their horses chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,552 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Noel Meade did a phone interview last year at the one in Malahide where his lack of confidence in Go Native was noticeable.

Best one i was at was about 7 or 8 years ago in Adare where they had Irish and UK jockeys and trainers, none of which were the obvious names people always look for. I remember that Richard Johnson gave 3 winners and explained why they would win instead of the usual 'just give us a horse' for this race.

I dont know if I'm reading this right or not, but David Pipe did have a good word about both of those horses last year at the preview night.

The whole event last year was excellent. John Francome and Davy Russell were brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

You sure, i was positive he didnt mention either. Maybe i wasnt paying enough attention.

Yeah i always enjoy the banter and loved talking to Pricewise at the break. He was very open and told us exactly what bets he had and at what prices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭Gdep

Ya i had them both noted down on my book. I think it was when they quickly went through the handicaps at the end of the night. I backed them both solely on that. 2 decent horses as well.

Will def be going again this year. See if Pricewise will have changed his mind on Pride of Dulcotte by then.

The Waterford preview night has raised over €60,000 for charities over the last four years and the hope is that a decent amount will be raised this year also for SVP.
Anyone who buys a ticket for the night will be entered into a draw for some excellent prizes, whether they end up going or not. ( overnight stay at Cliff House Hotel, golf at Old Head of Kinsale, and at K Club to mention a few)

Last year over 700 attended and it was impossible to get a good seat unless you were there early!!!!
Pricewise was a new addition to the panel last year and is returning due to popular demand.

    Hi Catherine,

Do you arrange all the nights for the Country or just Waterford. if you do could you please see if you can Nicky Henderson and/or Paul Nicholls for Westmanstown.

    Ta :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭Catherine Power

    Hi Hucklebuck.

I'm only involved in organising the preview for Waterford. We have a small organising committee and as it's a pretty big preview night it takes a bit of organising.
In my experience trainers, especially ones with decent chances of success at the festival are slow enough to sit on the panel eg. Willie Mullins doesn't do any of them anymore (maybe because he's asked to do so many)
Henderson and NIcholls would be good but I think our panel is very strong!!!!:o

Are tickets available on the night for the preview in Waterford on 3rd March or is it better to buy the tickets in advance??
    Where can I get tickets:cool:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭Catherine Power

Tickets available from Monday 31st January at Woodlands Hotel @ €20

The event is a fundraiser for St, Vincent de Paul, Wateford region and conference members of SVP all over Waterford are also selling tickets so anyone intending going on the night should really get ticket in advance.

There are some really good prizes for our raffle for anyone who would like to support St. Vincent de Paul but cannot go on the night ......so make sure you get tickets early!!!!!

Just got tickets 4 preview in waterford.
The 20e also gets u into a draw 4 some good prizes, so if u cant turn up on the night u hav a chance 2 win a decent prize.

Really looking 4ward to hearing what Francome has to say, very entertaining panelist!

    Just to let everyone know
First prize in the raffle for the Waterford preview night at the Woodlands Hotel is

a VIP day for four at the Punchestown Festival.. A nice prize for racing fans!!!! The other prizes are Overnight accomodation for two including dinner in Michelin Star restaurant at Cliff House Hotel, Ardmore, a year's membership to the Leisure Centre at Woodlands Hotel, four ball at Old Head of Kinsale, Four ball at Capella Golf resort, Castlemartyr, Co. Cork.

I've been asked this a few times...so just to clarify the ticket for €20 gets you into the preview night and into the draw and if you buy your ticket from a SVP member, half the cost of the ticket stays in that members conference!!

    Catherine
I have attended for past few years and its a great evening and always with an amazing panel (esp John F and Davy R)...Can I make one slight request, get the hotel to open a bar out to the side a bit beacuse as the evening goes on it gets harder and harder to hear the panel as the crowd at the bar get louder and louder....the people who are genuinely interested get very annoyed, and its very disrespectful to the panel....Brillinat night though !!

Has anyone heard anything about a preview evening in Cork this year?
I went to the one in Silversprings last year. Richard Johnson was very good and gave us Menorah to beat Dunguib
There was a very small crowd at it so not sure if they'll be hosting it again

    Solerina

Will certainly mention your suggestion to the powers that be in the Woodlands Hotel .
There is talk of closing the bar in the function room, however there is another bigger bar in the hotel and if the public want drink...........

May be all the really interested punters should come along as early as possible and get the really good seats at the top of the hall. We are expecting over 700 so come early.

BTW interview with Mick Fitz in the local papers this week. Also spoke to Francome. He's really sweet on Time for Rupert in the RSA Chase!!!
Interesting to see will that be top tip on the night.
