OK So I saw this cheapo unit that said mpeg4 dvb-t, had a hdmi output and a scart output. I presumed that would work for RTE2 as it can output HD at 1080i. unfortunately it was too good to be true as it comes up as unsupported format when on rte 2. Why would this be if it can display HD and mpeg4?

It's a shame because it's a nice small little unit that records to usb and was delivered for €26

P.S. I know you get what you pay for but a lot of people are just looking for the cheapest possible way to watch the channels into the future so was worth a punt for that price.

Saorview recievers required MPEG4 Level 4 for HD broadcasts, this was always a requirement for Saorview. The receiver you bought is only capable of MPEG4 Level 3 for SD broadcasts.

Was it advertised as Saorview compatible ? Where did you buy it

No defo not saorview compatible. It's from china. I didn't know about the different levels so just saw all the spec and wanted to see if it would work. No worries was small money and another one to cross off the list. Shame though cause everything else works well on it.

Also, I can't see why it has hdmi if it doesn't decode mpeg4 hd ?

HDMI is just a means of connecting to the TV. Recently Lidl/aldi sold SD only satellite receivers with HDMI.

    Buyer beware!

If you are going to source your own cheap box.

Make sure it says MPEG4 H264 @ L4 under Video.

Make sure it says HE-AAC under Audio.

Get one of these if you want cheap full H264 profile, that can record, and play MKVs AVI's etc - €59.

Yeah I saw MPEG4 H264 with HDMI, Scart and USB record for €26 delivered and thought it was worth a go. Now I know to look out for the L4 bit as well. Thanks. Will just give this away for someone to use til April.
